“Reports: Mavericks Could Land Kyrie Irving in Blockbuster Three-Team Trade”
The Dallas Mavericks’ blockbuster trade for star point guard Kyrie Irving is scheduled to be made official sometime Monday.
However, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that it’s not finished yet. The NBA insider goes on to note that the Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets are looking to include a third team. Said report contains a tidbit about the Toronto Raptors’ potential involvement.
Irving travels from Brooklyn to Dallas with Markieff Morris in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round pick and two second-round picks. If Toronto or any other team got involved, it would change the dynamic a lot.
Kyrie Irving would obviously still go to Dallas. The bigger question is who Brooklyn would acquire in a hypothetical three-team trade. Reports after Sunday’s box office hit suggested general manager Sean Marks is still out to make a splash to keep the Nets in the championship fight and placate star Kevin Durant.
In the North, the Raptors were among the most courted sellers ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. All-star point guard Fred VanVleet has been a major subject of rumors in this regard. Perhaps the Nets are looking to acquire him from Toronto in an expanded trade for Dinwiddie and other assets going to the Raptors.
NBA insider Marc Stein addressed the issue after Wojnarowski’s report broke. The idea would be to send Dinwiddie and draft picks to the Raptors. In return, Brooklyn adds an All-Star-caliber point guard while being able to retain three-and-D wing Dorian Finney-Smith from Kyrie Irving’s original trade with Dallas.
Either way, this is an evolving story. Later on Monday something will be made official. The only question is whether this will be an extended blockbuster or just feature the Nets and Mavericks.
