SGTC’s John Deere TECH Program Offers Hands-On Training for Agricultural Technicians

South Georgia Technical College’s John Deere TECH Agricultural Technology program is a five-semester program that trains students to become John Deere technicians. To enroll in the program, students must be sponsored by a John Deere dealer. Students spend eight weeks on campus in classrooms and labs, followed by eight weeks of hands-on training with a dealer. The program repeats this pattern several times throughout the course.

The program began in August 2014, and South Georgia Technical College has already graduated several classes. Upon completion, students earn a two-year associate of applied science degree in Agricultural Technology and become certified in electrical and hydraulic systems, as well as John Deere’s computer-based diagnostic tool, Service ADVISOR™.

Studies show a critical shortage of technicians in this field, and the John Deere TECH partnership helps meet this demand. Graduates of the program bring their John Deere certifications to the dealership, which helps students secure their careers.

South Georgia Technical College’s Agricultural Technology program also includes general education courses, as well as extensive hands-on training. Students use John Deere equipment, training components, and computer diagnostic tools to understand how machinery works, including engines, drive trains, and product applications for various agriculture and turf equipment.
