Virtual Monitoring for Early Discharge: Heart Patients Recover at Home.

Heart attack patients in Lancashire can now recover at home, thanks to state-of-the-art virtual monitoring technology. Developed by the Lancashire Cardiac Centre at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, the digital monitoring system frees up hospital beds and enables patients to be more engaged in their own care. Patients are given virtual clinic follow-up calls one week, four weeks, and 12 weeks after surgery. The treatment pathway has been adopted in collaboration with Barts Health NHS Trust in London, where it has become routine. The early discharge pathway means more patients can be cared for at home, where most prefer to be. The system has received positive feedback from patients who appreciate the collaborative care and involvement in their own recovery. By leveraging virtual monitoring technology, the Lancashire Cardiac Centre has developed an innovative model of care that improves patient outcomes and reduces the burden on hospital resources.

Project lead Rachel Haworth said the remote monitoring system “improved outcomes” and enabled patients to access “specialist support whilst continuing their recovery in their own homes.” Furthermore, the virtual clinic has received positive feedback from patients who appreciated the collaborative care and involvement in their own recovery.

Coronary Care Unit ward manager Susan Ashmore added that the early hospital discharge pathway has been well received by both patients and staff. It has allowed patients who meet the criteria to be discharged home sooner, freeing up CCU beds for other emergency admissions.

By leveraging virtual monitoring technology, patients are able to receive specialist care while recovering at home, improving bed efficiency and reducing pressure on the healthcare system. The virtual platform developed by Dr Choudhury and his team has enabled patients to be more engaged in their own care, leading to better outcomes and higher satisfaction.
