Apple is no stranger to borrowing ideas from Android, such as crash detection. Another Android feature Apple is reportedly interested in is reverse loading. A new rumor has it that Apple wanted to release the feature last year but is still working on it.
Accordingly 9To5Macs Sources reportedly familiar with the matter said Apple was looking to introduce reverse charging with the launch of the iPhone 14. Rumor has it that the feature would have been exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro, but the company encountered technical delays that caused it to miss its mass production date.
Reverse charging was first introduced to Android in 2018 with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It has since expanded to a range of Android devices over the years.
Apple reportedly had plans to adopt the feature in 2019. This was discovered in a teardown of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which had reverse charging disabled. This rumor continued with the iPhone 12 after a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing revealed that the iPhone 12 had wireless charging hardware but reverse charging was inactive.
However, it was reportedly not just the iPhone that indicated Apple’s desire to implement the feature. The MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 also indicated this. Accordingly 9To5Macthe battery would have received power from the smartphone when the iPhone 12 was plugged in.
The report also notes that Apple could again delay the feature or simply cancel it. It seems the tech giant has struggled to solve the challenges of thermal management and charging speeds.
