The University of Wyoming is hosting the Women in STEM Conference on May 16, 2023, to inspire female students to pursue their passion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The conference will provide workshops on a range of science- and technology-related topics, admissions presentations, campus tours, and an opportunity for young ladies to meet professionals who work in STEM fields. Currently, more than 530 female students have registered from various communities and schools across Wyoming. The workshops will take place in different locations on the UW campus, and major supporters of the event have yet to be announced. However, past contributors have included the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium, a UW College of Arts and Sciences Inreach Grant, the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Energy Resources, and Wyoming IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).

The University of Wyoming (UW) is hosting the Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Conference on May 16, 2023, at various locations on the UW campus. The event is designed to inspire over 530 junior and senior high school female students from across the state to pursue their passion in STEM fields and offer them role models and mentors. The conference, which was previously known as the Women in Science Conference, is in its 23rd year, and its goal is to provide young women with information about majors and careers in science, engineering, mathematics, and technology. According to Megan Candelaria, an assistant research scientist in UW’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and associate director for the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium, women make up only 34% of the STEM workforce, and the disparity is more pronounced in engineering and computer science, where women make up around 20% to 25% of the workforce. The conference will offer 31 hands-on workshops, and each participant will engage in three of them, and they will have the opportunity to meet professionals who work in STEM fields. By engaging young ladies in hands-on STEM activities, the conference hopes to help them see potential paths for themselves into a STEM discipline. At the conference, Rhea Chaudhari, a Laramie High School student, displayed a “working hand” she built using engineering design principles during a “NASA Micro-g NExT: Lunar Anchoring Devices” session taught by UW’s Cowboy Claw Senior Design Team at the 2022 Women in STEM Conference at UW.

The Women in STEM Conference at the University of Wyoming will offer workshops on a range of science- and technology-related topics to inspire junior and senior high school female students across the state. These will include cybersecurity, plant immunity, math outside of the classroom and falconry. The event, scheduled for May 16, will also provide admissions presentations, campus tours, and an opportunity for young ladies to meet professionals who work in STEM fields. The workshops will take place in various locations on the UW campus, including the College of Agriculture Building, Engineering Education and Research Building, College of Health Sciences Building, Geological Museum, Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium, Ross Hall, the Science Initiative Building and on Prexy’s Pasture. The Wyoming Union will host welcoming and closing remarks. Major supporters of this year’s conference have yet to be announced, but past contributors have included the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium, a UW College of Arts and Sciences Inreach Grant, the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Energy Resources and Wyoming IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE). So far, over 530 female students have registered from several communities and schools across Wyoming, and more schools are expected to register before the event.
