As Turkey and Syria begin to assess the damage caused by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that has so far killed at least 4,300 people, countries around the world have mobilized to help rescue and recovery efforts support.
Rain and snow are troubling the rescue workers, but specialized teams from many nations, including Italy, the United States, Israel and Taiwan, are on the move.
Iraq is helping Syria. Security forces were processing supplies from the Red Crescent relief group to be sent to the neighboring country
Iraqi soldiers and Iraqi Red Crescent workers loaded trucks with the materials.
Taiwanese rescue workers plan to assist in search and rescue operations in Turkey.
A specialized team of firefighters from the Urban Search and Rescue Team of the Czech Republic will help search for people in the rubble in Turkey.
The Czech USAR team is specially trained to find people who may be buried under the rubble.
Members of the Dutch search and rescue team were to fly out of Eindhoven to provide assistance in Turkey.
About 50 firefighters and medical personnel left Pisa, Italy, to help with rescue efforts at the Syrian-Turkish border.
Rome says that after the firefighters arrive, more flights will follow, bringing medical personnel and equipment to Turkey.
Greece’s prime minister pledged on Monday to make “every available force” available to help neighboring Turkey. They sent supplies and rescuers on a plane the same day the quake struck.
Greece and Turkey have suffered from various border and culture disputes in the past.
Bulgarian rescue teams have been dispatched through the Kapikule border gate to assist with relief efforts across Turkey.
The Israel Defense Forces “Olive Branches” Auxiliary Detachment left Israel for Turkey to assist in earthquake recovery efforts. Israel’s prime minister also said he had agreed to send aid to Syria — whose government Israel does not recognize.
Israel received a request to help Syria through diplomatic channels. But Damascus refused to ask for help.
US President Joe Biden said his teams would be quickly deployed to support Turkey’s search and rescue efforts.
The US said it would send two search and rescue teams, each with nearly 80 people.
Flowers are laid at the Turkish Embassy in Moscow. A burning candle with a small placard reads “Condolences to Turkey”. Russia has offered aid to both Turkey and Syria.
