Discover Metro's St. Joseph Altars 1

Several Catholic churches in Louisiana will hold St. Joseph’s altars open to the public on the weekend of March 18-20, 2023. The altars will offer various meals and items for donation. St. Anthony of Padua, St. Benilde Church, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and St. Genevieve will serve meals to the public on March 19th, while other churches, such as St. Cletus Catholic Church and St. Gabriel the Archangel, will donate their blessed food to shelters. Many churches will bless their altars on March 18th and host public viewings on March 19th and March 20th. St. Joseph Church & Shrine will host a prayer service and mass with food and cookies served in the gymnasium on March 19th, and St. Matthew the Apostle Parish will bless its altar on March 19th after its 9:00 a.m. mass with lucky beans, holy cards, and medals for sale. Mid-City Rock ‘n Bowl will collect donations to be forwarded to Ozanam Inn on March 19th.

March 19th is celebrated worldwide as St. Joseph’s Day, with elaborate altars created at various churches across the globe, featuring plenty of food. Luckily, a list of all the St. Joseph Day Altars in the metro area has been compiled for you to visit and indulge in the experience.

  • All Saints Catholic Church: On March 18th and 19th, 2023, before and after all masses, All Saints Catholic Church will be holding an altar in New Orleans. Donations can be made in exchange for St. Joseph Candles, Lucky Beans, and Prayer Cards. There will also be free Lucky Beans, Prayer Cards, and Cookies. All donations will cover altar expenses and support parishioners and friends of All Saints who are in need. The altar will be located at 1441 Teche St. in New Orleans.

  • Archbishop Chapelle High School: On March 17th, there will be an altar blessing at noon, followed by viewing until 8 pm with the Rosary at 7 pm. On March 18th, viewing will take place from 9 am to 4 pm with Tupa Tupa at noon followed by lunch. Rosary and Altar candles are available.   • Ascension of Our Lord Church: The altar will be held on March 18th and 19th, 2023 before and after all masses. St. Joseph candles, Lucky Beans, and Prayer Cards will be available for purchase. Additionally, cookies will be available for sale. The altar will be located in the Piovan Parish Hall, which can be accessed from the Church parking lot at 1900 Greenwood Drive in LaPlace, LA.   • Blessed Seelos Parish: On March 17th, noon-7 p.m., March 18th, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and March 19th, the altar will be open for blessing after the 9:30 a.m. Mass until 2 p.m. with meals. The altar will be held at 3037 Dauphine St. in New Orleans.

  • Brother Martin High School: On March 18th, 2023, there will be a Blessing of the Altar at 3 pm. The altar will be open to the public from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. following the Blessing. Candles and blessed bags will be available with a donation. The altar will be held at the James B. Branton Chapel, located at 4401 Elysian Fields Ave. in New Orleans.   • Cabrini High School: On March 18th, the chapel will be open from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and on March 19th, from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Meals will begin at noon, and donations will be dedicated to chapel roof repairs.   • Holy Family: On March 18th, 2023, you can find a St. Joseph Altar at 1220 14th Ave. in Franklinton, located in the Parish Hall. Blessing and serving of the Holy Family will occur after the 10 a.m. Mass of St. Joseph, and the public will be served afterward from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Immaculate Conception: The altar will be located at 132 Baronne Street in New Orleans from March 17th to March 20th, 2023. The viewing times vary by day: Friday, March 17th from 8 am to 4 pm, Saturday, March 18th from 8 am to 3 pm, Sunday, March 19th from 8 am to 5 pm, and Monday, March 20th from 8 am to 4 pm.

  • Loyola University New Orleans: On March 20th, 2023, from 11 am to 4 pm, you can visit the St. Joseph Altar located at the Loyola University New Orleans Danna Student Center by Starbucks. The Blessing will occur at noon.

  • Most Holy Trinity: The Blessing of the Altar will occur on March 20th, 2023, after the 8:45 am daily Mass, followed by the Feeding of the Little Saints. The serving line will open to visitors at approximately 10 am. The altar is located at 501 Holy Trinity Dr. in Covington.

  • Mount Carmel Academy: The St. Joseph Altar can be found at 7027 Milne Blvd. in New Orleans in Cafe Campbell (enter on Milne Boulevard). The Blessing will take place on March 17th, 2023, at 7:45 am, and the altar will be open for viewing until 5 pm.

  • New Orleans Catholic Cemeteries: On March 18th, 2023, from 10 am to 2 pm, you can join the second annual St. Joseph’s Day Altar at St. Joseph Cemetery No. 1. The Blessing will occur at 10 am, and the public viewing will continue until 2 pm. Our Lady of the Lake will open its doors for altar viewing on March 18 from 1 pm to 5:30 pm. Blessings and Tupa Tupa will be at 9 am on March 19, followed by feeding off the faithful until the food runs out. Donations to assist the poor may be sent to the parish office. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church

The St. Joseph’s Altar will be open for public viewing at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church on March 17 from 5:00-8:00 pm, March 18 from 11:00 am-7:00 pm with Feast at 2:00 pm, and March 19 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm. Visit Vincent Hall, 1324 Moss Street, New Orleans.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church

Join the Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church on March 18, 2023, at 9:00 am for the Blessing of the Altar and viewing. Altar may be viewed after the 10:00 am Mass until noon on March 19. Meatless pasta will be served on that Sunday after Mass. Visit 1835 St. Roch Avenue 70117 In Church.

St. Alphonsus / St. Mary’s Assumption

St. Angela Merici Parish

Visit the St. Angela Merici Parish on March 17 and 18, 2023. The altar will be open on Friday from 6-8 pm, with a candlelight rosary at 7 pm, and on Saturday from 10 am – 7:30 pm. St. Catherine of Siena’s Rosary Altar Society

The St. Catherine of Siena’s Rosary Altar Society will hold their St. Joseph’s Altar on March 19th from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. A spaghetti meal will be served on March 19th from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm in the school cafeteria, and cookies and items will be available for sale. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Destrehan will hold its altar on March 18th from 9 am-6 pm and on March 19th from 8:30 am-2 pm. Cookies, bread, and other items will be available for donation. The altar will be located in the Borromeo Room on campus at 13396 River Road, Destrehan. Please follow the signs on campus for directions.

St. Cletus Catholic Church

St. Cletus Catholic Church in Gretna will hold its St. Joseph’s Altar on March 17th from 6:30 pm, with a rosary, blessing, and viewing afterward, closing at 8 pm. The altar will open on March 18th at 11:00 am and close at 8:00 pm. Cookies will be available for donation, and food will be served from 11 am until it runs out. Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The altar will be available for viewing until 6 p.m. Visitors to St. Rita in New Orleans, located at 2729 Lowerline, can view the altar after a blessing on March 18 following the 8 a.m. Mass. It will remain open until 5:30 p.m. On March 19, it will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mid-City Rock ‘n Bowl
