Dave Franco Aims to Bring Back ‘Big’ and ‘Old School’ Horror with David Cronenberg-Inspired Film (Exclusive)

Based on starring in comedic projects like 21 Jump Street, NeighborsAnd The Disaster ArtistHer fans were surprised when actor Dave Franco made his directorial debut with the disturbing horror film The rent, but this project may not just have been an experiment with the genre as he recently revealed he wants to return to horror for an upcoming project. While The rent He explored themes of friends being stalked by an unknown person, and his affinity with David Cronenberg has led him to similarly replicate that style, delivering a project of practical effects. Franco’s latest film, the romantic comedy someone i knewhits Prime Video on February 10th.

When asked by ComicBook.com what filmmaking genre he might delve into next, Franco explained, “I’m not taking anything off the table, but I have a bit of an urge to go back to horror. I’m just such a fan of the genre, and [wife] Alison [Brie] and I, we’ve been going through a phase recently where we’ve been re-watching a lot of Cronenberg films, and it just made me want to really do something with practical effects and really take the time to get that right and doing it where it feels really dated and tangible and gross and all that stuff.”

While Cronenberg films may never become big financial hits, his legacy of films is like The breed, scannerAnd videodrome means that filmmakers have rarely attempted to reinvent their films from new perspectives. Given his affinity for Cronenberg, Franco shared his film that he could possibly revive and chose a Cronenberg film that was itself a remake of a film starring Vincent Price.

“It’s hard for me to say,” the filmmaker confirmed when asked if he’d be interested in reinterpreting one of Cronenberg’s films. “I don’t believe. It is difficult. I don’t think so… It’s just so hard to touch some of these classics. I want to do something like that’ is The fly. I just love how awesome it gets. It’s so gross.”
