A Chicago woman was arrested Saturday in connection with the murder of a 4-month-old child who died of child abuse a few days earlier, according to law enforcement.
Norma Chagnama, 29, was arrested for murder – a high likelihood of causing death or injury, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.
According to firefighters, emergency crews were first called to the 4700 block of North Lawndale Avenue Thursday afternoon to an unconscious, non-breathing baby. The baby was taken to an area hospital where she died 12 hours later.
Through an autopsy, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the baby died from multiple injuries inflicted by child abuse. The infant has been identified as Zury Cruz Sumba, officials said.
A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Family Services said the agency had already been in contact with the family and was investigating.
Chagnama’s relationship with the child remained unclear on Sunday evening.
