“Calling All Volunteers! Help Provide Free Tax Preparation Services to Low-Income Families”
Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) volunteers are needed in New Brunswick.
The program offers free tax help and a simple tax solution to those on modest to no income.
Natasha Brewer, a team leader at CVITP, said her greatest need is in Grand Manan and Sackville.
“To host a free tax clinic, we don’t necessarily need 10 or 20 volunteers,” Brewer said in a recent interview. “We provide volunteer training, support and resources.”
Volunteers could fill a range of roles, she said, such as tax preparers, greeters and interpreters.
Brewer said her goal is to make sure everyone who qualifies for the program gets the help they need.
According to the Canada Revenue Agencymodest income generally means total family income of less than $35,000 for one person, $45,000 for two people, $47,500 for three people, $50,000 for four people, $52,500 for five people, and $2,500 for each additional person.
A tax situation is generally considered easy when an individual has no income or when their income comes from employment, pension, the Canada Pension Plan, retirement security, disability insurance, labor insurance, welfare, RRSPs, grants, bursaries, grants, and interest under $1,000 .
Brewer said it’s important for Canadians to file tax returns even if they don’t have reportable income.
“A lot of people think that if they don’t have any income, they don’t have to or shouldn’t file a tax return,” she said. “Submitting this statement could result in them receiving benefits or credits to which they are entitled.”
