Auburn University’s Office of University Writing (OUW) has launched its Writing Across Curriculum (WAC) Academy as part of its efforts to expand and strengthen writing excellence. The academy began with 30 faculty, staff, and professionals from different departments at Auburn University who aimed to develop plans for integrating and enhancing writing across various units. Departments such as the McWhorter School of Building Science, the School of Communication and Journalism, the College of Nursing, and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering are organized into teams to improve their curriculum’s writing component. The Director of University Writing expressed his satisfaction with the success of the academy, and the positive feedback and participation from the faculty, staff, and professionals led to the announcement of the Summer 2023 WAC Academy. The academy’s goal is to create an effective writing-enriched course certification, such as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which will certify writing-enriched courses and create resources for effective mathematical proof writing.
Auburn University’s Writing Across the Curriculum Academy
Auburn University’s Office of University Writing (OUW) is determined to expand and strengthen its writing excellence program, as it launched its spring Writing Across Curriculum (WAC) Academy earlier this semester. This academy is one of several initiatives sponsored by OUW to enhance student learning in various content areas.
The academy, which began with 30 faculty, staff, and professionals from different departments at Auburn University, aims to develop plans for integrating and enhancing writing across various units. Departments, such as the McWhorter School of Building Science, the School of Communication and Journalism, the College of Nursing, and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, are organized into teams to improve their curriculum’s writing component.
Christopher Basgier, the Director of University Writing, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the academy, stating that the program is immersive and collaborative. He believes that the participants will continue to engage in the writing and assessment process long after the academy experience ends.
Over five in-person sessions, teams create a comprehensive plan to integrate and enhance writing in their curricula. The program’s goal is to create an effective writing-enriched course certification, such as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which will certify writing-enriched courses and create resources for effective mathematical proof writing.
Project examples include a sequenced set of activities that will guide undergraduates to reflect on their curricular and co-curricular experiences and map their career future goals from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
The academy’s success is evident from the positive feedback and participation from the faculty, staff, and professionals, which has led to the announcement of the Summer 2023 WAC Academy. The summer academy is scheduled for five consecutive Tuesdays, from May 23 to June 20. Interested participants can visit the academy’s webpage for registration and more information.
