Residents of East Palestine, Ohio are facing the aftermath of a devastating train derailment that occurred on Friday night. The three-person train crew received a warning about a mechanical failure just before the derailment, which caused more than 50 cars to derail and some to catch fire. The train was carrying a variety of products from Madison, Illinois to Conway, Pennsylvania, including hazardous materials such as vinyl chloride, flammable liquids, butyl acrylate and benzene residue. Although there has been no confirmed release of vinyl chloride, officials have strongly recommended an evacuation zone within one mile of the crash site. The Ohio National Guard has been activated to help with the emergency, and local and state authorities are also on the ground in the village.

Sheriffs are going door-to-door to count the remaining residents, and those in the evacuation area have been urged to leave. The evacuation order affects homes for 1,500 to 2,000 of the city’s 4,800 to 4,900 residents. The mayor of East Palestine has declared a state of emergency, and roads, schools, and businesses have been closed. Air quality monitors away from the fire show that there is no concern, and the city’s water is safe because it’s fed by groundwater that hasn’t been contaminated.

Environmental Protection Agency officials are working to remove pollutants from rivers and monitor water quality. A relief center has been opened in the village to collect information from affected residents. The National Transportation Safety Board is still working to determine which car had the axle problem, and a preliminary investigation report is expected to be released in the next month or two. Officials have stressed that short-term contact with low concentrations of substances in connection with the derailment does not pose a long-term health risk to the residents.
