A Young Versace Campaign at Age 10
Kaia Jordan Gerber was born on September 3, 2001, the daughter of the model Cindy Crawford and the nightlife and tequila businessman Rande Gerber. Hello! magazine gives her birthplace as Los Angeles, and she grew up in Malibu with her older brother, Presley.
Her first fashion job came at 10, when she modeled pieces from Young Versace, the Italian label's line for children and juniors. In July 2015, at 13, she signed with IMG, one of the largest modeling agencies. She kept up with school by taking classes at Malibu High School, online for much of the time, while she worked. She has not gone to college, and told Vogue she was in no hurry: "I can always go. I have no problem with being a 50-year-old in college."
Calvin Klein and the September 2017 Runway Debut
Gerber's runway debut came just after she turned 16, in September 2017, when she walked in Raf Simons' Calvin Klein show for the Spring 2018 collection at New York Fashion Week. The rest of that season moved fast. She walked for Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Prada in New York, London, Paris, and Milan, and in Milan she and her mother walked together in the Versace Spring 2018 show.
In the same stretch, according to TV Insider, she landed her first solo cover for the Paris edition of Vogue, fronted Marc Jacobs' Daisy fragrance campaign, and signed with Yves Saint Laurent as the face of YSL Beauty. Her advertising work in those years also included Burberry.
Vogue's Big Four and the 2018 Fashion Awards
By 18 she had covered all four of the magazines the industry calls Vogue's Big Four: the American, British, French, and Italian editions. Hello! reported that she was the first model born in the 2000s to do it. In 2018 the British Fashion Council's Fashion Awards named her Model of the Year. Models.com, which runs its own separate awards, had given her its Breakout Star award the year before.
Gerber has been direct about where her start came from. In a February 2023 Elle cover interview, she said: "I won't deny the privilege that I have." She repeated a joke her mother used to make: "If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you." Asked for the advice Crawford gave her, she listed it: "Be on time. Take the time to learn people's names, and be nice to everyone."
From Sister Cities to The Shards
Gerber's first screen role was in the 2016 TV movie Sister Cities. Her first series part came in 2021 in FX's American Horror Stories, where she played Ruby. By the time of the Elle interview in 2023 she described acting as her "primary focus," and said the family name counted for less there than it did in modeling: "With acting, it's so different. No artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone's kid. That just isn't how art is made, and what I'm interested in is art."

Library Science, the Book Club
Hello! reported that after high school, when she moved to New York, she spent a lot of time in bookshops and was rarely seen backstage without a book. During the 2020 lockdown she started an informal book club on Instagram, talking with authors and actors about the novels she picked.
That club became Library Science, which she runs with Alyssa Reeder and which officially launched in March 2024. Its own site says it covers fiction, translations, essays, plays, and poetry, with a focus on debut writers and books that "aren't on the typical bestseller lists," and that it plans bookshelves, conversations, and an annual publication.
None of the sources for this article reports a marriage or children. Hello! reported in 2023 that she had been in a relationship with the actor Austin Butler since December 2021.
Presley Gerber, Her Older Brother
Presley Gerber, two years older than Kaia, also worked as a model; Hello! reported that he made his runway debut at 16 in Moschino's 2017 Cruise show. In an interview with Vogue in August 2026, Kaia spoke about her brother's struggles. "When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone," she said, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Presley died on September 20, 2026, in Los Angeles, at 27. Deadline and the Associated Press reported that he died at a rehabilitation facility. A family representative confirmed the death and said, "The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time." Santa Monica police said they were investigating it as a possible overdose, with no indication of foul play, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner deferred a ruling on the cause pending further tests.
Why There Is No Net Worth Figure
Gerber's modeling and acting fees are not public, and no financial publication has published an estimate of her wealth with a method behind it. The figures that circulate online come from celebrity net worth sites, range from $3 million to $19 million, and show no inputs. This article does not repeat any of them.
