Unraveling Vaccine Hesitancy History

Laura Davis, the producer of “Virulent: The Vaccine War,” is a seasoned producer who has worked on various documentaries, telefilms, and features. “Virulent: The Vaccine War” is a documentary examining the history of vaccine hesitancy, denial, and the effects of Covid-19 on the anti-vaccine movement. Laura’s previous projects include “Everest: On Location in the Death Zone,” “The Chef & The Architect,” and “Still Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack.” She began her career as an interviewer on NBC Radio and later for Showtime/The Movie Channel after graduating from Cornell University. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Dr. Joe Schwarcz.

On May 11th, 2023, the McGill Office for Science and Society (OSS) will screen “Virulent: The Vaccine War,” a documentary that delves into the history of vaccine hesitancy and denial. Directed by Tjardus Greidanus and produced by Laura Davis, the film examines the effect of Covid-19 on anti-vaccination activists and how the anti-vaccine movement weaponizes history to target Black Americans and other minority communities.

Following the screening, Dr. Joe Schwarcz, Director of the OSS, will moderate a Q&A session with Laura Davis. To attend, interested individuals must register for free on the McGill Office for Science and Society website.

Laura Davis is an experienced producer who creates impactful documentaries on medical history. Her previous projects include “A Shot to Save the World,” a CINE Golden Eagle-winning documentary on the creation of the Salk polio vaccine, and “Burden of Genius,” which explores the pioneering work of Dr. Thomas Starzl in organ transplantation.

Before moving into documentaries, Laura Davis produced marketing featurettes for major studios, including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, and Warner Bros. Over two decades, she produced over 30 projects for acclaimed directors such as Martin Scorsese, James L. Brooks, Mike Nichols, Cameron Crowe, and Michael Mann.

Laura’s documentaries have been screened at top transplant centers worldwide and were recently shown at Kyiv’s National Specialized Children’s Hospital, where medical staff is caring for those injured in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
