Discover Kun Iam's Renovated Waterfront

The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) recently completed the “Star on Coast” facelift project on the Kun Iam Statue waterfront promenade, adding more leisure facilities and attractions for tourists and local residents, such as seating areas, food truck-style cafes, and a children’s bumper car ride. The Star on Coast project aims to link multiple landmarks in the area and provide additional facilities to cater to the increasing number of visitors. IAM is in the design stage of the next phase of the project, which aims to create a coastal promenade linking the Macao Science Center to Barra, passing through the Macau Tower. The specific section linking the Kun Iam Statue to the Macau Tower is currently in the design stage, and a final proposal will be presented by the end of this year. The promenade will include facilities such as ball grounds, a skateboarding park, and a cycling track, among others.

New Attractions and Facilities at Kun Iam Promenade 3

The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) recently completed a significant renovation of the Kun Iam Statue waterfront promenade, known as the “Star on Coast,” that links the Macao Science Center (MSC) to the Leisure Area of Kun Iam Statue Waterfront. The facelift, aimed at attracting more visitors, added new attractions and convenience facilities, such as seating areas, potted plants and flowers, and two food truck-style cafes that offer light foods, snacks, and drinks. IAM officials revealed at a press conference that the project, which concluded recently, will provide new event venues in partnership with the MSC.

The Star on Coast aims to be an integrated zone with multiple functions and elements, including children’s play, leisure and sport, food and beverage, arts and culture, and science popularisation. The area also features a new children’s bumper car ride that had already begun operations. IAM officials noted that, since the opening of the Leisure Area of Kun Iam Statue Waterfront in May 2021, some 800,000 people have visited the area, with that number expected to increase with the reopening of borders.

IAM stated that the Star on Coast project will link multiple landmarks in the area “to radiate to the public activity space nearby and create a synergetic effect.” IAM officials further explained that the Star on Coast project’s purpose is to provide additional facilities to cater to the increasing number of visitors. To kick off the new area’s activity, from March 25 (Saturday) to April 23 (Sunday), IAM, the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and the MSC will collaborate on an ecological conservation and scientific knowledge themed event that includes an ecology-themed exhibition to introduce wetland ecosystems and information about ecological conservation. Additionally, the event will have parent-child activities, stargazing, ecology workshops, and interactive games.

Lastly, the “Star on Coast” will feature a new “Busking Point” from the Cultural Affairs Bureau, where street performers can present their performances and shows to the public. IAM officials also revealed that the IAM is in the design stage of a new coastal promenade extension project that will link the Macao Science Center to Barra, further enhancing the region’s coastal leisure and entertainment offerings.

Isabel Celeste Jorge, the Member of the Administration Board of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), recently announced that the design stage of the next phase of the coastal promenade project, which aims to link the Macao Science Center to Barra, passing through the Macau Tower, is underway. The specific section linking the Kun Iam Statue to the Macau Tower is currently in the design stage, and a final proposal will be presented by the end of this year. The project has faced delays, and construction may not begin until 2024, with partial completion expected in 2024 and full completion in 2025.

According to Jorge, the promenade will include various facilities, such as ball grounds, a skateboarding park, and a cycling track, among others. The topic of this section of the promenade has been raised on several occasions after being first presented during the first policy address by the government of Ho Iat Seng. Lo Chi Kin, vice president of the IAM’s Administration Committee, announced during a meeting of the Municipal Affairs Advisory Committee in late November 2022 that the design for the promenade section was ready but could only be unveiled this year.
