Team USA Advances to the World Baseball Classic Championship Game

Team USA convincingly defeated Cuba 14-2, in front of a sold-out crowd of 35,779 at loanDepot Park on Sunday, advancing to the finals of the World Baseball Classic. The USA will face the winner of the Japan-Mexico game on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET on FOX) for the chance to repeat as champions of the WBC.

Trea Turner continued his impressive batting performance by hitting two home runs and four RBIs on Sunday, the day after his game-winning grand slam against Venezuela. Turner’s four homers are the most by any USA player in WBC history, with his 10 RBI equaling the tournament record.

While the game was largely peaceful, heightened security measures were in place to prevent any possible disruption. Although small protests took place outside the ballpark, no violence was reported. Inside the ballpark, the game was briefly halted three times when protesters ran across the field, with one protester holding a banner that read “Libertad Para Los Cubanos” (“Freedom for Cubans”).

Regardless of batting order, Turner commented that the USA team has an excellent lineup, and the players always expect someone to be on base.

USA Defeats Cuba With Ease in WBC Game

USA defeated Cuba 14-2 on Sunday in the World Baseball Classic. Despite concerns about potential political unrest, the game was mostly peaceful. There were some scattered boos and a few items thrown into the bullpen, but nothing alarming.

Before the game, USA manager Mark DeRosa asked officials about what to expect during the bus ride to the game. However, there was little visible commotion. USA third baseman Nolan Arenado, whose father is Cuban, spoke about his family’s sacrifices and how proud he was to play against Cuba. He declined to offer his opinion on Cuban players who elected to play on the Cuban national team, including major league players.

After a strange first inning, USA pitcher Adam Wainwright settled down and led the team to victory. He allowed only two hits after the first inning, going four innings before being replaced by Miles Mikolas (four innings) and Aaron Loup (one inning). The USA scored in every inning and had at least two runs in all but one inning.

DeRosa chose Wainwright to start the game because he believes nothing will faze him. Wainwright, 41, is the oldest player on the roster and has experience pitching on the biggest stage.

The USA will face the winner of the Japan-Mexico game on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET on FOX) in the WBC championship game.
