The University of Evansville’s Track & Field team had a successful outing at the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky. Graduate student Antonia Lamond set a new school record in the women’s hammer throw, while senior Zach Dove won the men’s discus competition and took second place in both the shot put and hammer throw. Other notable performances included Denzel Lasam taking second place in the men’s triple jump and Kate Walke achieving third place in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. The team is scheduled to compete at the Margaret Simmons Invitational in Murray, Kentucky, next weekend. UE men’s team placed seventh with 45 points, and the UE women’s team finished in eighth place with 19 points.
Lamond and Dove Lead the University of Evansville’s Track & Field Team at Jim Vargo Invitational
Antonia Lamond, a graduate student from the University of Evansville, set a new school record in the women’s hammer throw, while Zach Dove, a senior from Princeton, Indiana, won the men’s discus competition and took second place in both the shot put and hammer throw events. The duo led the University of Evansville’s Track & Field team at the Jim Vargo Invitational held in Louisville, Kentucky.
Lamond smashed the school record for the women’s hammer throw, throwing a distance of 35.05 meters (115′ 0″). Her performance surpassed former Ace Brittany Corley’s 2021 school record, and helped Lamond place seventh overall. The windy and cold weather did not deter Lamond from her excellent performance.
Dove dominated the men’s throwing events by winning the discus competition with a throw of 46.87 meters (153′ 9″), finishing second in the shot put with a toss of 13.65 meters (44′ 9.5″), and placing second in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.16 meters (151′ 5″). Jaden Hayes, a fellow senior thrower from Huntingburg, Indiana, took third place overall in the discus with a throw of 41.84 meters (137′ 3″), and eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 12.10 meters (39′ 8.5″).
UE also achieved a second-place finish in the men’s triple jump event, where Denzel Lasam, a sophomore from St. Louis, Missouri, jumped a distance of 12.82 meters (42′ 0.75″). In the women’s javelin throw, Hannah Bryan, a junior from Evansville, Indiana, placed sixth with a distance of 22.20 meters (72′ 10″).
On the track, Giovanni Purser, a senior from Port Maria, Jamaica, placed fifth in a tightly-contested 100-meter dash with a time of 11.11 seconds. Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Rachel Rosborough, a junior, achieved UE’s fastest times in the 100- and 200-meter races, clocking in at 14.01 and 29.34 seconds, respectively.
Other notable performances include Adam Oulgout, a sophomore from St. Paul, Minnesota, finishing in tenth place in the 800-meters with a time of 2:01.50, and Joey Taylor, a freshman from Grove City, Ohio, who closely followed behind with a time of 2:02.88. Oulgout also posted a time of 4:09.99 to finish 15th in the 1,500-meters.
Kate Walke, a freshman from Batesville, Indiana, achieved a third-place finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:22.38, while graduate student Melanie Helder, from Hudsonville, Michigan, finished the 1,500-meters race with a time of 4:59.97, breaking the five-minute mark.
Overall, Lamond and Dove led the University of Evansville’s Track & Field team with their outstanding performances at the Jim Vargo Invitational, showcasing their talent and skills.
The UE men’s team took seventh place with 45 points, and the UE women’s team finished in eighth place with 19 points. The University of Evansville’s Track & Field team is set to compete at the Margaret Simmons Invitational in Murray, Kentucky on Friday and Saturday. (55 words)
