The Dallas Cowboys have made a smart move this offseason by acquiring wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. Cooks will join a strong pass-catching group in Dallas that includes CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and T.Y. Hilton. The Texans, on the other hand, received a D+ trade grade for this deal since Cooks had made it clear that he no longer wanted to be part of the organization. Although they received Day 3 draft picks in exchange, the team will also pay over a quarter of Cooks’ salary for next season, which is unnecessary for a rebuilding team that needs more capital to build around their rookie QB. With Robert Woods, Nico Collins, and John Metchie III at the position, the Texans are thin going forward.

The Dallas Cowboys have traded for wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. The 29-year-old Cooks had 57 receptions for 699 yards and three touchdowns last season despite missing four games. He joins a strong pass-catching group in Dallas that includes CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and T.Y. Hilton. Cooks has registered at least 42 receptions in each of his nine seasons in the NFL, with six seasons ending north of 1,000 receiving yards. He has been traded four times in his career and has two years remaining on his contract with an average salary cap hit of $25.5 million. The Texans will be paying $6 million of Cooks’ contract for the 2023 season.

Houston is left with Robert Woods and Nico Collins at the position after the trade. The Texans received draft picks as part of the Deshaun Watson trade, giving them flexibility following the Cooks trade. The team holds the No. 2 and No. 12 overall selections in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Cooks’ frustration with the Texans led to his sitting out a game for personal reasons, and he will now have a new start in Dallas.

The trade grades for the Cowboys are an A.

The Dallas Cowboys have made a smart move this offseason by acquiring wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. The Cowboys had their sights set on Cooks since the trade deadline last season, and now they have him at a bargain price. With the Texans also paying $6 million of Cooks’ contract for the 2023 season, Dallas gets an ideal speed threat to complement CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup in their offense. Cooks, who has put up impressive numbers throughout his career despite inconsistent quarterback play, could have a very high ceiling in the Cowboys offense with Dak Prescott.

On the other hand, the Texans received a D+ trade grade for this deal. Cooks had made it clear that he no longer wanted to be part of the organization, which made it challenging for Houston to maximize its return. The Day 3 draft picks they received in exchange are not significant assets, and the team will also pay over a quarter of Cooks’ salary for next season, which is unnecessary for a rebuilding team that needs more capital to build around their rookie QB. With Robert Woods, Nico Collins, and John Metchie III at the position, the Texans are thin going forward.
