Atlanta United's Teenage Duo Crushes Portland Timbers 1

Caleb Wiley and Thiago Almada Lead Atlanta United to a Dominant Win over Portland Timbers

Atlanta United achieved its best start in club history with a 5-1 triumph over the Portland Timbers on Saturday. Teenage defender Caleb Wiley scored again, while Thiago Almada added a goal and two assists to lead the team to victory.

Scoring started in the 25th minute when Wiley received a pass from Almada and scored, giving Atlanta United a 1-0 lead. Wiley, just 18 years old, became the fifth youngest player to have a hand in three goals, after he contributed to three goals in last week’s 3-0 victory over Charlotte FC.

Almada scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time, extending Atlanta United’s lead to 2-0. The score remained the same until the 59th minute when Giorgos Giakoumakis scored, with assists from Wiley and Luiz Araújo, to make it 3-0. Araújo added to the lead in the 75th minute, receiving a pass from Almada and scoring.

In the 83rd minute, Tega Ikoba got Portland on the scoreboard with an assist from Diego Gutiérrez. However, Portland was unable to mount a comeback, and Almada scored in the 86th minute to cap the scoring. Derrick Etienne Jr. and Andrew Gutman had assists.

Atlanta United outshot the Timbers 18-9, with eight of those shots on goal compared to Portland’s three. Brad Guzan made two saves for Atlanta United, while Aljaz Ivacic stopped three shots for Portland.

It was the Timbers’ first trip to Atlanta since losing 2-0 in the 2018 MLS Cup Final. Portland falls to 1-3-2 all-time versus Atlanta. The Timbers picked up their first win in the series last season, a 2-1 victory in Portland.
