In a remarkable display of football skill, Abram Smith’s 202-yard rushing performance helped the D.C. Defenders secure their fifth consecutive victory in the XFL 2023 season.
Despite wanting to quit football as a youngster due to the physicality of the sport, Smith’s mother encouraged him to keep playing and be the aggressor on the field. Now, as a star player for the undefeated D.C. Defenders, Smith’s exceptional talent was on full display against the St. Louis Battlehawks.
Smith scored three touchdowns and rushed for a total of 217 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. His impressive performance helped the Defenders take the lead early on, with a 14-3 advantage by halftime.
D’Eriq King’s 10-yard run in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 28-12, but St. Louis fought back with a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to make it 28-20 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Battlehawks had a chance to tie or win the game in the final minutes, but a crucial interception by Defenders DB Michael Joseph sealed their fate.
Looking ahead, the undefeated Defenders will play at home in their next game against the 4-1 Houston Roughnecks in a week’s time.
