Crazy in Alabama at Nine

Dakota Mayi Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, the daughter of the actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. Her maternal grandmother is the actress Tippi Hedren, and for most of her childhood her stepfather was Antonio Banderas, who was married to Griffith until 2015. She spent part of her childhood in Colorado and later went to school in Monterey and Santa Monica, California.

Her first film role came at nine. In Crazy in Alabama (1999) she played the daughter of the character played by her own mother.

Miss Golden Globe and The Social Network

In 2006 she was named Miss Golden Globe. She worked as a model before taking acting seriously. After high school she landed a part in The Social Network (2010), and over the next few years she built up a list of supporting roles: Beastly (2011), The Five-Year Engagement (2012), and 21 Jump Street (2012).

Anastasia Steele and the Fifty Shades Contracts

The part that made her famous was Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). Biography.com calls it her most famous role. The money behind it was modest at first. The Hollywood Reporter reported in March 2015 that Johnson and her co-star Jamie Dornan were each paid $250,000 for the first film, plus tiered box-office bonuses, with no share of the back end, and that both had signed three-picture deals. Before the sequels, both were looking for seven-figure raises.

The trilogy ended with Fifty Shades Freed in February 2018. By its opening weekend the three films together had passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Deadline reported. In between, Johnson took roles that pulled her away from the franchise image, including Black Mass, Suspiria (2018), and The Peanut Butter Falcon.

TeaTime Pictures with Ro Donnelly

In October 2019 Johnson and Ro Donnelly, a former development executive at Netflix, announced TeaTime Pictures, a production company with a first-look television deal at Platform One Media, a Boat Rocker company. In December 2021 Boat Rocker bought a minority stake in TeaTime, which stayed independent. By then the company had two films selected for Sundance, Cha Cha Real Smooth and Am I OK?, and was in production on Daddio, with Johnson and Sean Penn attached.

Materialists and an A24 Milestone

In June 2025 A24 released Materialists, Celine Song's romantic drama, with Johnson opposite Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. It opened to $12 million in North America and went on to pass $100 million worldwide on a budget of about $20 million. Variety reported that it was the first independent film of 2025 to cross that mark.

No reputable outlet has published a dated estimate of Johnson's net worth. The one figure that comes from the trade press is the $250,000 fee for the first Fifty Shades film; later salaries and the value of her TeaTime stake have not been disclosed. Celebrity net worth sites print totals, but they show no inputs, so this article does not give one.

Verity, Patient Zero, and a Third Turn Hosting SNL

The first weekend of October 2026 brought three things at once. Verity, the Amazon MGM thriller directed by Michael Showalter with Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett, opened at No. 1 with $32.6 million in North America and $62.5 million worldwide on a reported $40 million budget. Days earlier Johnson had appeared in Taylor Swift's music video for "Patient Zero."

On October 3 she hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time. Swift walked into the opening monologue, and at the end of the show came back with a birthday cake, because Johnson turned 37 the next day. In the monologue Johnson joked about her own year: "I went through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians." She added: "Some people leave concerts with merch and I leave concerts with a two and a half year relationship."

She has not spoken publicly of a marriage and has no children of her own. In a Vogue interview quoted by Fox News, she said she wants a family and wants to slow down: "I've worked back-to-back for so long that now I have this deep calling to shift my perspective a bit and maybe have a bit more of a real life." She also said: "I've been gone for, like, 20 years."
