The Television Workshop in Nottingham

Bella Ramsey was born in Nottingham in 2003 and grew up in Leicestershire. "I was born in Nottingham and I live in Leicestershire," they told the Nottingham magazine LeftLion in 2023. Ramsey uses they/them pronouns.

The training came from The Television Workshop, a youth drama group in Nottingham. Ramsey joined at around 10 or 11. In the first year they were placed in the reserve group and moved up to the main group the year after. In 2023 they still said: "TV Workshop is the best. I still go whenever I can."

An Audition in Manchester for Lyanna Mormont

The Game of Thrones casting began with an email that the family barely understood. Nobody in the house had watched the show except Ramsey's older sister. Ramsey was given a script to learn and went to a single audition in Manchester. About a week later the family heard that Ramsey was being seriously considered, and about a week after that their mother took the call. Ramsey was 11 and in Year 6 at primary school.

The role was Lyanna Mormont, a new character, so the casting had to stay secret until the episodes aired. Grazia calls Ramsey the breakout star of season six. The character returned in seasons seven and eight. It was Ramsey's professional debut.

King's InterHigh and Exams Between Battle Scenes

Secondary school did not go well. Ramsey told the Evening Standard at 15 that they left mainstream school feeling that "everyone was put in a box." After trying to study at home, they joined King's InterHigh, an online school, which let them sit GCSEs while filming. The first time a stranger recognised them, Ramsey later recalled, was in the toilet queue at St Pancras Station.

Ellie in The Last of Us

HBO cast Ramsey as Ellie in The Last of Us, its adaptation of the video game, on the strength of the Game of Thrones work, and the first season aired in 2023. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the showrunners kept adding more for Ramsey to do. The Television Academy lists two Primetime Emmy nominations for the role, for outstanding lead actress in a drama series, in 2023 and again in 2025 after the second season aired in April of that year. Grazia counts further nominations for a BAFTA, two Golden Globes, two Critics' Choice Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild award, and lists Ramsey on the Time 100 Next in 2023 and on Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe in 2024. A third season is due in 2027.

While promoting the first season, Ramsey came out as non-binary. They told The Hollywood Reporter in 2025 that they/them is "the most truthful thing for me," while saying they do not much mind which pronouns people use. During the first season they were also diagnosed as autistic, after conversations with the showrunner Craig Mazin. "Craig has an autistic kid," Ramsey said. "Craig and I share quite a similar brain in a lot of ways." The thought that followed was simple: "I better get this checked out."

The Liberation at Telluride

In September 2026 the film The Liberation premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. Ramsey plays Ella, the daughter of Carrie Coon's character Rita, and Deadline's review singled out the performance. Ramsey also plays Zora in The Sheep Detectives, according to Stylist.

No reputable outlet has published an estimate of Ramsey's earnings or wealth. The figures that circulate come from celebrity net worth sites and disagree with each other, so this article gives none.

Series Two of The Celebrity Traitors

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, BBC One began the second series of The Celebrity Traitors, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, with ten episodes on Thursdays and Fridays and up to 100,000 pounds at stake for charity. Ramsey, at 23, is the youngest player. The cast includes Maya Jama, Richard E. Grant, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Romesh Ranganathan, Jerry Hall, and James Acaster.
