Revolutionizing AEC Job Training with Virtual Reality

Florida International University (FIU) has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a virtual reality platform that will use AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to provide personalized job training to workers in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries. The platform will be developed in a game format to help teach AEC students and professionals how to operate industrial robots. As users perform tasks in the system, AI software will track their language to determine which concepts they are acquiring, and the system will recommend specific lessons to the user. The project is part of the NSF Research on Emerging Technologies for Teaching and Learning (RETTL) program and aims to help workers prepare for the changing world of work. Mark Finlayson, co-principal investigator of the project, said that the work will be an important step in understanding how to bring AI benefits to education research and give education researchers a model to follow in the use of cutting-edge NLP analyses. NSF Grant to Develop Virtual Reality Games for Job Training in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction

FIU has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to create a platform for training workers in architecture, engineering, and construction through the use of virtual reality games. The grant aims to meet the rising demand for skilled workers in these industries by developing an innovative solution that can keep up with the changing world of work. With this initiative, workers can receive comprehensive job training through a digital platform that makes use of virtual reality technology. This project is set to revolutionize the way job training is conducted and help workers prepare for the future of work.

NSF Grant to Develop Virtual Reality Games for Personalized Job Training in AEC Industries

With robotics and automation rapidly transforming jobs in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, there is an increased demand for skilled workers in advanced technologies and robotics. To address this demand, the National Science Foundation has awarded Florida International University (FIU) a grant to develop a platform that will use virtual reality games to train workers for the new world of work.

Personalized Learning Program for AEC Industry Workers

FIU faculty from the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA’s) School of Architecture and the College of Engineering and Computing’s Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences will work together to develop a personalized learning program for AEC industry workers. The project is one of 20 nationwide funded through the NSF Research on Emerging Technologies for Teaching and Learning (RETTL) program.

Collaboration to Develop Advanced Virtual Reality Training Platform

FIU researchers Shahin Vassigh (principal investigator), Mark Finlayson (co-principal investigator), Professor Biayna Bogosian (co-principal investigator), teaching professor Eric Peterson, along with RDF lab researcher Madeline Gannon, will collaborate with learning scientist Seth Corrigan from the University of California-Irvine and Shu-Ching Chen, data scientist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and former FIU professor. The goal is to develop an advanced virtual reality training platform that would be developed in a game format to help teach AEC students and professionals how to operate industrial robots.

Personalized Lessons and Delivery Sequences

As users perform tasks in the system, they will be asked to talk through their decisions. Artificial intelligence (AI) software will then track their language to determine which concepts they are acquiring. With this data, the system will then recommend specific lessons to the user. For example, if a participant is struggling with how to use a robot’s pivot points to reach an object, the system will go back to the words and actions of the user to provide the most relevant lesson.

Similar to Grading Essay Questions

“This method is similar to how teachers and professors grade essay questions,” said Finlayson, eminent scholar chaired associate professor of computer science. Teachers don’t look solely for right answers in students’ papers. They look for the thinking, the qualitative data, that led to the right answers. By analyzing this evidence of concept acquisition, a teacher can figure out which concepts a student isn’t understanding and offer better feedback. The platform will work the same way.

With this initiative, workers can receive comprehensive and personalized job training through a digital platform that makes use of virtual reality technology. This project is set to revolutionize the way job training is conducted and help workers prepare for the future of work.

NSF Grant to Drive the Application of AI and NLP Technologies in Learning Data Analysis

According to Mark Finlayson, co-principal investigator of the NSF-funded project to develop a personalized virtual reality training platform for AEC industry workers, the project will help drive forward the application of AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies in learning data analysis. He stated that this work will be an important step in understanding how to bring AI benefits to education research and give education researchers a model to follow in the use of cutting-edge NLP analyses. The grant will pave the way for the development of advanced virtual reality training systems that can provide personalized job training for workers in the AEC industries.
