The South East Technological University is hosting its third ‘Women in Technology’ event on 30 March, sponsored by Red Hat, which aims to promote the role of women in technology and remove any perceived barriers. The event showcases the opportunities for female students who are considering college or are at earlier stages in secondary school when they are considering subject choices. Attendees will have the chance to meet and talk to women who have interesting and varied careers in technology, engineering, ICT, and software development. The technology sector needs more women studying technological courses available to forge a career in a variety of interesting technical roles, which offer flexible lifestyle options. The event will also encourage attendees to focus on the next generation of female tech talent to make gender equality in technology a reality. School groups can register for the event at www.setu.ie/womenintechnology or students can drop in on the morning.
SETU is set to host the third ‘Women in Technology’ event at SETU Arena in Waterford on Thursday 30 March. The event, sponsored by Red Hat, aims to promote the role of women in technology, provide information on pathways for women to enter suitable courses at SETU, and remove any perceived barriers that may exist.
The event provides inspiration and encouragement to female students who are curious about a job in technology or who already see this as a pathway to a great career. The last event held in 2019 attracted over 1,000 female students from Cork, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Wexford, Carlow, and Waterford.
The technology sector needs more women studying technological courses available, like those at SETU. These graduates can then begin to forge a career in a variety of interesting technical roles that provide a flexible lifestyle, where they may be part of a team of people to develop new ideas, services, and products.
Women in Technology will showcase the very best of Women in Technology, providing an opportunity for attendees to meet and talk to women who have interesting and varied careers in technology, engineering, ICT, and software development, women who are changing the face of technology and society.
According to Sinead Walshe, a lecturer in computing at SETU and one of the event’s organisers, the event aims to showcase opportunities to female students who are considering college or are at earlier stages in secondary school when they are considering subject choices. There are a lot of jobs in technological industries across the region and huge opportunities for career development.
The event will also encourage attendees to focus on the next generation of female tech talent to ensure that there is, numbers wise, a more balanced reservoir from which to draw, in order to make gender equality in technology a reality. Solving this issue will have real-world consequences for the future of society and the world.
The ‘Women in Technology’ event will feature female keynote speakers, as well as stands from the largest technological companies in the region, all of whom will be available to interact with attendees during the morning. School groups can register for the event at www.setu.ie/womenintechnology or students can drop in on the morning.
