The Future of Remote Work

The leading barriers to collaboration were identified as a lack of digital skills, people not having time to collaborate, and a lack of face-to-face meetings. Securing communication platforms was cited as an obstacle to collaboration by 25% of IT leaders, and 17% identified the impaired ability to share information as a barrier to collaboration.

Storm Technology, a business technology consultancy, has released the results of a survey conducted by Tech Central. The survey reveals that 41% of IT leaders believe their company will become 100% remote in the future. Over two-thirds (67%) of respondents believe their organisation is currently equipped to support such a move. However, 65% of respondents believe their company is not using remote/hybrid working solutions to their full potential.

Challenges Stemming from Remote/Hybrid Working

IT leaders identified several challenges with remote/hybrid working. Supporting company culture was the biggest challenge, cited by 42% of respondents. Other challenges included providing secure access to company systems and information (39%), training staff to use existing technologies to the fullest (39%), enabling collaboration across locations (35%), and managing remote devices (31%).

Long-term Issues Arising from Remote/Hybrid Working

IT leaders identified spending too much time in meetings (46%) as a long-term issue arising from remote/hybrid working. Working longer hours (39%), having to spend time on wellness to prevent burnout (32%), and not staying ahead with the latest tools to do the job (30%) were also cited as long-term issues.

Positive Impact on Staff Wellbeing, Employee Experience, and Business Growth

Remote/hybrid working had a largely positive impact on staff wellbeing (80%), employee experience (77%), and business growth (69%). However, only 54% of respondents felt that remote/hybrid working had a positive impact on attracting and retaining talent. Only 35% believed it had a positive impact on company culture.

Barriers to Collaboration

The leading barriers to collaboration were identified as a lack of digital skills (48%), people not having time to collaborate (45%), and a lack of face-to-face meetings (44%). Securing communication platforms was cited as an obstacle to collaboration by 25% of IT leaders, and 17% identified the impaired ability to share information as a barrier to collaboration.

In conclusion, the workplace is rapidly evolving, and the findings of this survey suggest that remote work will become more prevalent in the future. While there are challenges and barriers to overcome, remote/hybrid working can have a positive impact on staff wellbeing, employee experience, and business growth.
