Jio's 5G Takes Over India

Reliance Jio has installed close to 1 lakh telecom towers, almost five times more than its nearest competitor, Bharti Airtel, to provide ultra-high speed internet and launch India’s fastest 5G network. As per the latest report by Ookla, Jio’s top median 5G download speed is 506 Mbps as compared to 268 Mbps of Airtel. 5G performance has increased across early 5G adopters in most of the telecom circles. Jio’s 5G network is based on a 5G Standalone (5G SA), which doesn’t rely on a 4G LTE network, making it a true 5G network. India, with over half a billion internet users, is the second-largest online market worldwide, just behind China. With Jio’s installation of a large number of towers, 5G connectivity is expected to be available in most parts of the country, providing better internet speeds and connectivity to people, even in remote areas.

Jio installs 1 lakh towers for the rollout of India’s fastest and deepest penetration 5G network

Reliance Jio, owned by Mukesh Ambani, has taken the lead in the Indian telecom market by installing close to 1 lakh telecom towers to launch India’s fastest and deepest penetration 5G network. This is nearly five times more than its nearest competitor. The company plans to offer ultra-high-speed internet to its customers.

As per the latest data from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Jio has installed 99,897 base transceiver stations (BTS) across two frequencies it owns – 700 MHz and 3,500 MHz. This far exceeds the number of BTS installed by Bharti Airtel, which stands at 22,219.

Jio’s installation of a large number of towers is expected to bring 5G connectivity to most parts of the country. This will provide better internet speeds and connectivity to people, even in remote areas.

Jio’s 5G Network Dominates the Indian Market with Fastest Speeds and Deepest Penetration

Reliance Jio, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has emerged as a dominant player in the Indian telecom market by installing almost 1 lakh telecom towers, nearly five times more than its nearest competitor, Bharti Airtel. In addition, for every base station, Jio has 3 cell sites while Airtel has 2, according to a report from March 23. This increased number of towers and cell sites translates to faster speed.

As per the latest report by Ookla, a global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights, Jio’s 5G network has achieved top median download speeds of 506 Mbps. This is compared to Airtel’s median speed of 268 Mbps. Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data shows that median download speeds across India increased by 115% since before the 5G launch, from a 13.87 Mbps median download speed in September 2022 to 29.85 Mbps in January 2023.

The Indian market for 5G telecom services was launched in October 2022, and Jio’s investment of $25 billion in its network is paying off with median 5G download speeds above 400 Mbps across ten telecom circles. Jio’s 5G network is based on a 5G Standalone (5G SA), which doesn’t rely on a 4G LTE network, making it a true 5G network.

According to Ookla’s report, Jio experienced a top median 5G download speed of 506.25 Mbps in Kolkata, while Airtel’s top median speed was 268.89 Mbps in Delhi. The report shows that 5G performance has increased across early 5G adopters in most of the telecom circles, with Kolkata achieving the fastest median 5G download speeds in January 2023 at above 500 Mbps.

Both Airtel and Jio have ambitious targets in terms of 5G network rollout. Ookla’s report indicates that 5G availability across 5G-capable devices has steadily increased, reaching 8.0% for Airtel and 5.1% for Jio.

India, with over half a billion internet users, is the second-largest online market worldwide, just behind China. With Jio’s installation of a large number of towers, 5G connectivity is expected to be available in most parts of the country, providing better internet speeds and connectivity to people, even in remote areas.
