IIT Roorkee and GIC Re have collaborated to develop solar window technology using semi-transparent perovskite solar cells that will enhance solar power generation and contribute to sustainable development. This partnership is a CSR initiative of GIC Re and in line with the United Nations SDGs 4, 7, 9, and 11 that promote education, green energy, and environmental sustainability. The technology will harness electricity during the daytime and eliminate carbon footprint while enabling households and business owners to save on power bills. Prof. Soumitra Satapathi and his team from IIT Roorkee’s Department of Physics will design and develop the technology, which is expected to offer high efficiencies and cost-effective energy solutions. The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) have joined forces to develop a solar window technology that will contribute to sustainable development and enhance solar power generation in India. The development is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 7, 9, and 11 of the United Nations. The two entities, IITRDF and GIC Re, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of GIC Re.
Under the program, semi-transparent perovskite solar cells will be developed by Prof. Soumitra Satapathi and his team from the Department of Physics (IIT Roorkee). The perovskite solar cells offer high efficiencies and help to cost-effective energy solutions. The new solar window technology will be designed to harness electricity during the daytime and reduce reliance on traditional electricity sources. This will eliminate carbon footprint and enable households and business owners to save on power bills while stepping up sustainable living.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Madhulika Bhaskar (General Manager & Director, GIC Re), Sneha Nair (Assistant General Manager, GIC Re), Board of Directors IITRDF β Prof. KK Pant (Director IIT Roorkee), Prof. Mukat Lal Sharma (Dean Finance And Planning IIT Roorkee), Prof. Partha Roy(Dean of Resources & Alumni Affairs IIT Roorkee) and Prof. Akshay Dvivedi (Dean SRIC IIT Roorkee). Santosh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer if IIT Roorkee Development Foundation was also present.
The new window solar technology will be developed for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and will offer an alternative to traditional electricity sources. The development of this technology will contribute to greater sustainable development in India and lead to a cleaner and greener environment. This CSR initiative is expected to promote and strengthen education, green energy, and environmental sustainability in line with the United Nations SDGs 4, 7, 9, and 11.
