However, a number of people are concerned about the invasion of their privacy that comes with these surveillance measures. To protect their privacy, a clothing brand called Cap_able has launched a new line of clothing that incorporates unique patterns and colors, designed to confuse facial recognition cameras.
Facial recognition technology uses AI to gather biometric data, which involves collecting physical attributes of individuals to confirm their identities. Cap_able’s unique fabric is designed to confuse facial recognition technology, so it cannot pick up biometric data like it usually can. As a result, the biometric data of people wearing Cap_able technology cannot be stored.
Cap_able patented its unique fabric in 2021 for industrial invention. However, the price of a Capable garment ranges between €370 to €640 a piece (£325 to £563), before any discounts. While this clothing line provides protection against invasive surveillance technology, privacy comes at a cost.
Campaigners have called for a ban on the use of facial recognition technology in streets, airports, and any public spaces where it is currently used. They argue that the technology is ‘unlawful’ and ‘unethical’ due to its ability to create ‘supercharged CCTV’ capabilities. The UK’s regulator for data protection, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has also raised concerns about the ethical sustainability of the technology.
