The quiet valley of Modane in the French Alps is home to a research center that houses cutting-edge aerospace technology. For 75 years, the center has been using wind tunnels to evaluate the performance of new missile and airplane designs during flight. Wind tunnels are large tubes that recreate the effects of movement and resistance of an aircraft in flight using continuous or gusty winds. The Concorde, Rafale, Airbus A380, Mirage, and Falcon are among the aircraft models tested in these tunnels.

The French national aerospace research center (ONERA) runs the facility and has recently seen an increase in demand for its services. With the aviation industry striving to reduce carbon emissions, and the French government pursuing military projects fueled by the war in Ukraine, ONERA’s wind tunnels are fully booked for the next four to five years.

The S1 wind tunnel, one of the four wind tunnels on-site, is a significant attraction for aircraft designers. At 24 meters wide and 400 meters long, it is one of the world’s largest wind tunnels and is exclusively powered by hydraulic power. The tunnel allows engineers to test large aircraft and missile models and find and solve problems early on. It also facilitates detailed aerodynamics simulations to ensure high measurement precision and resolution.

The S1 wind tunnel’s advanced transonic systems can reach the speed of sound, enabling experts to determine whether an aircraft in development can meet noise regulations when flying in the air. Here, engineers can also evaluate the fuel efficiency of nuclear missiles and new fuselages.

Initially built by the Nazis in the Austrian Alps in 1942, the tunnels were dismantled and transferred to Modane, France, in 1948 after the Allies discovered them at the end of World War II. Today, they remain an essential resource for the aerospace industry, with even the nuclear deterrent force’s missiles passing through them.
