Protecting Schools with AI Tech

School districts in the United States are implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance their school security and protect students and staff from active shooters. One school district in Maryland is currently installing software and hardware that will enable their security cameras to detect a potential shooter. The cameras will communicate with a third-party monitoring center if a gun is detected. AI gun detection technology has become increasingly popular following multiple mass shootings on school campuses. Companies like ZeroEyes are employing law enforcement experts to assist schools in reviewing threats more quickly. While AI technology has its limitations, school officials are implementing multiple layers of security measures to create a safer learning environment. AI technology is only one tool in their security plan, which also includes positive school culture and relationships with students and staff.

School districts across the United States are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a means of enhancing their student and staff safety measures. One district located in Charles County, Maryland, is currently in the process of installing both software and hardware that will enable their current security cameras to identify a possible active shooter on school premises.

Authorities investigate a home possibly connected to the school shooting in Nashville, Monday, March 27, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn. Jason Stoddard, Director of School Safety and Security for Charles County Public Schools, said, “This artificial intelligence has the ability to identify a weapon, assess the situation, and analyze how the person is acting.” With the use of a state grant, the school district is implementing AI gun detection technology on all of its campuses. The security cameras will now send alerts to a third-party monitoring center in case of any gun detection.

Omnilert, a company that is among a few businesses offering gun detection technology, believes that this AI technology will replace human monitoring in the future. Dave Fraser, the CEO of Omnilert, said, “The system is designed to allow for monitors to determine if a threat is real and if so, alert local police and school authorities within seconds.”

Following multiple mass shootings on school campuses nationwide, there has been a surge of interest in AI gun detection companies, such as ZeroEyes, a Pennsylvania-based company. Mike Lahiff, CEO of ZeroEyes, said in an interview with FOX News that his company employs law enforcement experts who can assist schools in reviewing threats more quickly. Lahiff also revealed that 80% of his employees come from the veteran community.

AI products are not without limitations, as they may not detect weapons hidden under coats or in backpacks. However, the school officials in Maryland stated that they have a multi-layer plan to deal with security and employ multiple methods for keeping students safe. AI technology is only one tool in their security plan, which also includes positive school culture and relationships with students and staff.

In conclusion, AI technology is being embraced as an effective means of keeping school students and staff safe. The use of AI gun detection technology in schools can alert authorities within seconds, thus providing them with ample time to respond appropriately and prevent a tragedy. While AI products have their limits, schools are implementing multiple layers of security measures to create a safer learning environment for everyone.
