Birth Place

Zay was an avid dancer since childhood. He started dancing at the age of 6 and gradually started turning heads with his free-flowing steps. Moving on, he started posting dance videos on various social-media platforms, apart from uploading videos on comedy skits and raps. Local film producer Timothy McCall approached Zay. McCall’s son, James, also known as Zayion, is a songwriter and rapper. Zayion met Zay in the summer of 2016. The meeting eventually led to a collaborative effort for the song ‘Juju on That Beat.’ Zayion wrote the lyrics of the song, while Zay contributed to the perky music. The song was a freestyle attempt over the beat of ‘Knuck If You Buck,’ the first single of hip hop/crunk group ‘Crime Mob's eponymous debut album.

‘Juju on That Beat’ was originally uploaded on Zayion’s ‘YouTube’ channel, on July 8, 2016, as one of the tracks from his mixtape ‘Why So Serious?’ It was posted on Zay’s ‘YouTube’ channel, ‘Zay Hilfiger,’ on November 2 that year. It has garnered a whopping 329 million views to date. The song gained momentum after videos of members of the dance group ‘Fresh the Clowns’ dancing to the song became viral on social media. In late 2016, the song was taken up for official distribution by American record label ‘Atlantic Records.’ The song peaked at the fifth spot on the ‘Billboard Hot 100.’ Being just two minutes and four seconds in length, it was one of the shortest songs to hit the chart in the last four decades. A reissue of the song, released by ‘Atlantic Records,’ was two minutes and twenty-three seconds long. The song reached the third spot on the ‘US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs’ (‘Billboard’) chart. With time, it became a viral dance challenge, raising the American hip-hop duo Zay Hilfiger & Zayion McCall to stardom. The music video of the song was posted on the duo’s ‘YouTube’ channel, ‘The ZayNetwork,’ on November 5, 2016. The following year, the video fetched the ‘Kids’ Choice Award’ for ‘Favorite Music Video.’ The song received a “double platinum” tag from the ‘Recording Industry Association of America’ (RIAA,) a “platinum” tag from ‘Music Canada,’ and “gold” tags from both the ‘Australian Recording Industry Association’ (ARIA) and the ‘Syndicat National de l'édition Phonographique’ (SNEP).
