He describes his Jewish heritage is important to him, explaining that he includes some of that influence in his designs. He is Israeli born, with roots in pre-World War II Austria and Hungary.
He has stated that his favorite place to travel is the Himalayas. When he is in Los Angeles, he enjoys hiking and playing volley ball on the beach.
Yotam has been a viola prodigy since childhood and is interested in art. He believes that what is happening in the world of art and music effects the design world and what is happening in design effects art and music.
Yotam Solomon was born on March 28, 1987, a second generation Israeli. His grandparents had emigrated to Israel from Austria and Hungary after World War II.
He grew up in Israel, studying art and music. A viola prodigy, Yotam moved to Los Angeles to study his instrument, attending ‘Beverly Hills High School’ and graduating from ‘Santa Susana High School’.
He excelled at his musical studies, earning the ‘National Orchestra Award’ in 2005. After high school, he attended ‘FIDM for Fashion Design’, graduating with honors.
Yotam's first real job was a pattern-making position for a men’s label. This position inspired him to begin to design his own label. He first presented at LA Fashion Week in October 2007 with his ‘Spring-Summer 2008 Ready to Wear and Footwear Collection’. He has since presented successfully at several Fashion Weeks both in LA and New York.
Yotam started the label he named for himself in July 2007. The motto for this brand is 'Slip into the extraordinary'. The line focuses on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and personal comfort while increasing awareness of social and ecological issues. The line accomplishes this goal by using environmentally friendly, natural materials.
In May 2010, Solomon became a spokesperson for ‘LG Electronics’, teaming up with spokeswoman Victoria Beckham to create a capsule line inspired by the ‘LG Lotus Elite’. At the end of this campaign, this line of classic clothing was presented at the ‘LG Fashion Touch event’, hosted by Beckham and Eva Longoria in West Hollywood.
In Fall, 2010, 'Women's Wear Daily' announced that he had launched a diffusion footwear line titled ‘YOTAM SOLOMON II’. Solomon's Fall 2010 collection, entitled 'Native American Collection' was presented at a private event in the Hollywood Hills.
In September 2010, he released a new line nicknamed the ‘BP Oil Spill’ line. This collection of clothes and shoes, as the name tells, features items that are loosely inspired by oil slicked animals affected by the spill. Proceeds from the sale of this line go toward fundraising for the NRDC and ‘Defenders of Wildlife organizations’.
In 2007, Solomon was the youngest designer to present at ‘LA Fashion Week’. He was just 20 years old. He has since gone on to present different lines both in LA and New York.
He himself has stated that his greatest accomplishment so far has been having ‘British Vogue’ write that he ..."remind audiences that showmanship and high-fashion are in fact still intact in California". However, he also said to ask him the same question in five years, meaning that there are still a lot of great things to come from the designer.
