Yolanda Gampp was born on July 21, 1977, in Toronto, Canada. She lives with her husband, David Gampp, and they have a son, Prince Gampp. She attended the George Brown’s Culinary Arts Program in Toronto which helped cement her passion for working with cakes. Furthermore, her father was a huge inspiration to her as he was a baker in Germany before migrating to Canada.
Being a mother might have slowed her down a little bit, but with immense support from her husband and her own mother, she is able to continue doing the thing that she likes the most: baking. Successfully running her YouTube channel as well as her cake business in Toronto, Gampp is one energetic force of nature! She is truly a gifted cake artist and is definitely on her way to become an out-of-the-world cake architect! To quote from one of her interviews, “May the cake be with you!”
Yolanda Gampp is a self-taught cake artist and began her career at a very early age. Ever since her childhood, she used to watch her father bake and knew that this was what she wanted to do when she grew up. Before running her own business, she worked for renowned bakeries, such as, ‘Desserts by Phipps’ and ‘Dessert Trends’ and was easily one of the best cake decorators that they ever had! She started building a loyal client base and made use of her mother’s kitchen to create her beautiful cakes. Her work began to be appreciated by the likes of ‘Fashion’ magazine, ‘National Post,’ ‘The Globe,’ and ‘Wedluxe.’ She started getting more and more orders and soon opened her own professional kitchen.
Gampp can make cakes out of anything and everything! She looks at the world in terms of cakes. In the year 2012, a reality sitcom, ‘SugarStars’ came her way where Gampp and her colleagues were to be filmed making elaborate desserts and designing sweet tables. This was a dream come true for Gampp who soon afterwards opened her first bakery called, ‘Sweet Fix,’ along with her colleagues, Caspar Haydar and Elle Daftarian.
Yolanda’s baking mantra is to keep it simple. She is the happiest when given an object to be transformed into a cake and she’ll do everything she can to make it look as real as possible. Her heart’s desire, running her own YouTube channel, took off in the year 2015. The channel was called, ‘How to Cake It’ and was an instant success amassing millions of subscribers and views! As one can see, the videos published by Gampp are very friendly, light hearted, warm, and filled with humor. The tutorials are easy to understand and very relatable.
Her enormous repertoire of cakes include a cake that looks like a human heart, novelty cakes in the shape of a $5000 Birkin bag, kissy face emoji cake, a hamburger-like cake, a keyboard cake, a Star Wars cake, and so on. The list is endless and fascinating! To take her channel, ‘How to Cake it,’ to the next level, is what she is focusing on right now. Also, to sign a book deal and have her work printed on paper is on the top of her bucket list! In her own words, “Dreams don’t have deadlines, so don’t stress yourself with that. Just know what you want and take the steps to achieve it, however slowly you may take them.”
