Yancy Butler was born as Yancy Victoria Butler on July 2, 1970 in Manhattan, New York, USA to Joe Butler, a vocalist and drummer, and Leslie Vega, a theatre company manager. She learnt ballet and dance at the prominent Joffrey and Ailey schools. She then studied at Sarah Lawrence College and received her bachelor's degree in liberal arts from there in 1991. Coming to the actress’ love and dating life, Butler had a boyfriend in the past. Currently, she is supposedly single.

Yancy Butler first appeared in the 1979 flick ‘Savage Weekend’ as a little girl. Her debut television appearance was in the1992 drama series ‘Mann & Machine’. After this, she appeared in seven episodes of ‘South Beach’. In 1994, the actress did the film ‘Drop Zone’. A year later, she played Corinne in the movie ‘Let It Be Me’. Then she had roles in the movies ‘Ravager’ and ‘The Ex’ in 1997. That year, Butler also began playing the role of Officer Anne-Marie Kersey in the drama series ‘Brooklyn South’.
