In 2009, he started playing for the ‘Groningen Grizzlies’ in the Netherlands. He also played for several other teams, such as the ‘Richmond Sockeyes,’ the ‘Langley Hornets,’ and the ‘UAH Chargers.’ In 2010, Russell suffered hip injuries and had to quit hockey. Soon, he decided to pursue a full-time career in acting.
