Tyler Alvarez was born Tyler Sage Alvarez, in New York City, on October 25, 1997, to a Cuban–American father and a Puerto Rican–American mother. His mother worked at a local private hospital, and his father worked for the ‘Drug Enforcement Administration,’ or the ‘DEA.’ Tyler was the second child in the family and had an elder brother named Nico.
As a child, Tyler had a keen interest in acting. Noticing this interest, his mother got him enrolled at an acting school. Tyler spent years performing on stage during school productions, and this helped him hone his skills. In addition, Tyler loved watching films and mimicing his favorite actors. He was an extrovert and a confident child. Apart from acting, Tyler was also interested in music and salsa. His mother also enrolled him into salsa classes.
Tyler learned Spanish from his parents. His Latino looks made it a little difficult for him to land good acting jobs in the beginning. After a bit of initial struggle, he bagged a pizza commercial. At the same time, he attended the ‘Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School’ in New York. He started his acting career while still in high school.
In 2013, Tyler made his big-screen debut with the low-budget film ‘The House That Jack Built.’ It was an indie film which failed to get enough attention. The same year, he played a small role in another indie film, ‘Brothers in Arms.’
Luckily, TV came to his rescue. His first TV project was a dream role for a beginner such as Tyler. In 2014, he bagged a role in the fantasy sitcom ‘Every Witch Way.’ The sitcom featured him in the role of ‘Diego Rueda,’ a human with supernatural powers. The series was inspired by ‘Grachi,’ the Latin–American version of the sitcom.
Critics and audiences, however, were not as kind to ‘Every Witch way’ as they were to ‘Grachi’ and the series was badly criticized for its cheap special effects and lack of chemistry between the characters. Despite abysmal reviews, the sitcom ran for four seasons before being taken off air. In 2014, Tyler reprised his role in the special episode ‘Every Witch Way: Spellboud,’ which was presented as a TV film.
In 2015, Tyler reprised his role of ‘Diego’ in an episode of the series ‘Talia in the Kitchen.’ It was not a spin-off of ‘Every Witch Way’ but was written by the same writers. A few characters featured in the cross-over episode. The same year, he appeared in the highly acclaimed ‘Netflix’ series ‘Orange Is the New Black.’ He portrayed ‘Benny Mendoza,’ a recurring role, for five episodes, in the third, fourth, and fifth seasons of the series.
In 2017, he appeared in the romantic thriller ‘High School Lover,’ in which he played ‘Larry,’ one of the major characters. The film was made for TV and starred Hollywood superstar James Franco in a small role. The critical success of the film inspired its makers to release it on DVD.
