Ty Pennington was born as Gary Tygert Burton on October 19, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia, the USA to Yvonne Burton and her first husband. He has a brother, Wynn. Following his parents’ divorce and their mother’s remarriage, Ty and Wynn went on to live with their mother and her second husband. Ty studied at Sprayberry High School and later attended Kennesaw State University. He then earned his bachelor's degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Atlanta.
Talking about his love life, the American host cum artist dated fellow model "K. Ring" in the 1990s. Since 2004, he has been dating Andrea Bock.
Pennington has been suffering from ADHD since 1992. Currently, he partners with Shire Plc to raise awareness about adult ADHD and also promotes the use of Vyvanse for the treatment of the disease.
Ty Pennington began his career as a model. He posed for print advertisements for Swatch, Sprite and J. Crew, and appeared in television advertisements for Levi's, Macy's, Diet Coke, and Bayer, among others.
In 1995, Ty Pennington became a set designer for the movie ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ leveraging his hands-on skills and design techniques to build a career in the entertainment industry. However, his professional breakthrough came through TLC’s innovative show ‘Trading Spaces’. In 2003, Pennington began working on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’. The same year, he appeared in the independent movie ‘The Adventures of Ociee Nash’.
In 2008, he started his show ‘Ty's Great British Adventure’ and worked with many communities including Portreath, Cornwall (UK) and Portishead, North Somerset (UK). In 2012, he was cast in the talk show ‘The Revolution’. After the show got cancelled within seven months, Pennington began pursuing other goals.
Ty Pennington owned the company Furniture Unlimited in the past. He then partnered with Sears to develop a line of bedding, bath accessories, furniture, and other home décor items.
Pennington published his first book ‘Ty's Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus Cheap and Easy Projects to Transform Any Room’ in (2003). On May 15, 2007, he came up with the first issue of his magazine ‘Ty Pennington at Home’. The following year, he announced his partnership with Marketplace Events. That year, Pennington also became the spokesperson for Abbott Nutrition, representing their baby formula packaging innovation, Similac SimplePac.
In September 2011, he appeared on Disney's ‘Take Two With Phineas and Ferb.’ In 2014, he became the spokesperson for the Chicago-based mortgage lender Guaranteed Rate.
