Tosca Musk

Tosca was born on July 20, 1974, in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa. She is the youngest child and only daughter of Errol and Maye Musk (née Haldeman). Her father has been an electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor, while her mother has worked as a model and dietitian. When Tosca was about five years old, in 1979, her parents divorced. She was the only one among the siblings to stay with their mother throughout the years. Elon left their mother two years after the divorce of their parents to stay with their father and Kimbal joined Elon four years later. After he graduated from high school, Elon moved to Canada in June 1989. About a year later, Tosca and Maye relocated to Canada as well and began to live out of a rent-controlled apartment in Toronto.

Tosca attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a BFA degree in film studies in 1997. She is married and is mother of twins—a boy and a girl. Tosca is involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a board member.

Tosca Musk started off her career in the entertainment industry as a production secretary on an episode of Discovery Channel’s documentary series ‘Grand Illusions: The Story of Magic’. She debuted as a producer with a television documentary called ‘TV Guide Television’. Tosca made her big screen debut with the 2001 film ‘Puzzled’, which she wrote, produced, and directed. The film was released under Musk Entertainment, a production company that she founded in 2001.

In 2004, she served as one of the co-producers of ‘The Truth About Miranda’. A year later, she began her collaboration with Jeff Macpherson to create the web series ‘Tiki Bar TV’. During the Macworld 2005 Keynote presentation, which also featured the iPod with video, Steve Jobs introduced ‘Tiki Bar TV’ to the people there as an example of video podcasting, which could be installed on the new video iPod after downloading Apple’s iTunes software. On the following day, ‘Tiki Bar TV’ topped the iTunes Podcast charts, effectively becoming one of the first user-generated programs to garner international popularity through the iTunes distribution model.

Tosca served as the line producer on projects, such as the comedy horror ‘Cruel World’ (2005), thriller ‘9 Lives of Mara’ (2007), and horror ‘Evilution’ (2008). Her 2007 release ‘Simple Things’ (Comedy Remedy) won numerous awards, including three Best Picture Awards, the Audience Award and the Spirit Award at the International Family Film Festival. In 2011, she produced four telefilms: ‘Three Weeks, Three Kids’, ‘Borderline Murder’, ‘We Have Your Husband’, and ‘Holiday Engagement’. The last one, ‘Holiday Engagement’, premiered on Hallmark Channel on 28 November and was the most watched film made by the channel at the time. In 2012, she co-produced the Lifetime telefilm ‘Walking the Halls’. In the following year, she produced the crime drama ‘Gone Missing’. In 2014, she co-produced the short film ‘The Acting Teacher’. She was the producer of the 2016 horror ‘Havenhurst’ that starred Julie Benz, Fionnula Flanagan, and Danielle Harris.

In March 2016, she founded Passionflix, a streaming service exclusively focused on making romance films and TV shows. She presently serves as its CEO. By November 2017, they had raised $4.75 million and released several television films which were adapted from various novels. Their romance drama ‘Hollywood Dirt’ was based on the book of the same name by Alessandra Torre. Based on a book by Sylvia Day, the telefilm ‘Afterburn/Aftershock’ starred Greg Berney, Donny Boaz, and Andrea Bordeaux. They made one more telefilm that year, ‘The Trouble with Mistletoe’, which was based on ‘The Trouble with Mistletoe: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel’ by Jill Shalvis. Tosca directed both ‘Hollywood Dirt’ and ‘Afterburn/Aftershock’, whereas ‘The Trouble with Mistletoe’ was directed by Ashley Avis.

In 2018, Tosca directed ‘The Matchmaker's Playbook’, adapted from Rachel Van Dyken’s novel of the same name and ‘Driven’, which is based on a novel by Kristy Bromberg. She is serving as the producer of the upcoming comedy ‘Pornology’.
