Tony Romo was born as Antonio Ramiro Romo on 21 April 1980 in San Diego, California, in the US. His father Ramiro Romo Jr. worked for the US Navy, while his mother Joan Romo, worked as a clerk in a store.
Most of his childhood was spent in Southern Wisconsin. He was quite involved in sports since his school days. He idolized Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers, and was much inspired by his playing style. He graduated from high school in 1998.
Tony Romo attended the Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, and started playing for its football team. He proved to be a talent to reckon with. At the end of the year he was honored as an All-American honorable mention, an All-Ohio Valley Conference member, as well as the OVC Player of the Year.
In December 2002, he became the first player ever from his university to win the Walter Payton Award, after he passed for a total of 3,165 yards and 34 touchdowns during his senior year. Despite his brilliant skills and achievements, he went undrafted during the 2003 NFL draft.
Shortly after the NFL Draft, Tony Romo was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Dallas Cowboys. Though he had very little playing time during his first three seasons with the team, he became the starting quarterback in 2006.
He helped his team boost their overall performance, for which he earned much appreciation. He finished the 2006 regular season after having passed for 19 touchdowns, with 2,903 yards. He also became the second ever quarterback of the team to be selected for the ProBowl.
The following year, he successfully led his team to win their first National Football Conference East Division title in nine years. He finished the 2007 regular season with a total of 36 touchdowns, along with 4,211 passing yards.
He continued playing fabulously in the following season, leading his team to a 28-10 win against the Cleveland Browns during the 2008 season opening. However, he gained criticism after the final game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles, in which the Cowboys suffered a 44-6 loss. However, in the following year, he silenced his critics by achieving a career-high 4,483 yards, also leading the Cowboys to their first postseason victory after a period of 13 years.
Romo was limited to only six games during the 2010 season because of a fracture. However, he continued playing for the team over the next few seasons with excellent performances. His performance in the 2014 season can be regarded as the best in his career, as he led the NFL with a 113.2 passer rating while throwing 34 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. His team also won a division-title that season.
Among the awards won by Tony Romo in his career, the most significant ones are the Walter Payton Award, which he won in 2002 while playing for Eastern Illinois, and the ‘Ed Block Courage Award’ which he won during his NFL career.
Some of his achievements are throwing a total of five touchdown passes in a game twice (2006 and 2013) and having the most passing yards in a game (2013).
