In July 2002, he married his long-time sweetheart Jamie White on ‘Martha's Vineyard’, the island colony of Massachusetts. The couple live in Vancouver, Canada.
In his spare time, he pursues hobbies such as reading and playing basketball.
Tom Welling was born in Putnam Valley, New York and spent most of his early years in different parts of U.S. like Wisconsin, Delaware, and Michigan due to his father’s job in General Motors, which demanded the family to constantly move from one place to another.
His family finally settled in Okemos, Michigan, where he attended the Okemos High School. He was not very proficient academically and preferred to participate in plays and sports in school.
In 1995, following his graduation from high school, he worked as a manual construction worker at a warehouse.
In 1998, while at a party in Nantuket, he was spotted by a photography scout who was looking for a fresh face for a catalogue shoot. Excited by the offer, he accepted to become a print model for Abercrombie & Fitch, an American clothing brand.
Until 2000, he worked for ‘Louisa Modeling Agency’; where he modelled for Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Calvin Klein. The same year he appeared in Angela Via’s video single ‘Picture Perfect’.
As he was not happy with his modelling career and aspired to be an actor, he decided to move to Los Angeles. Here, he began auditioning for roles and appeared on television commercials for ‘Verizon’, ‘7 UP’ and ‘T.J. Maxx’.
In 2001, he bagged his first major acting role as ‘Karate Rob’ on the CBS television drama ‘Judging Amy’, which successfully ran for 138 episodes.
He appeared on the short lived American science fiction series ‘Special Unit 2’ and on the first episode of ‘Undeclared’, aired on Fox network.
He played the lead role in the television series ‘Smallville’ which is the longest running North American science fiction series and the longest running comic based series in television history. It is ranked at the number six position on Parents Television Council's list of the ‘best shows for families’.
