Tim Roth was born in Dulwich, London and studied at the Strand School in the True Hill area of South London.
He developed an interest in sculpting as a young boy and studied at London’s Camberwell College of Art, before he dropped out to pursue acting.
At the age of 21, he began his acting career with the television film, ‘Made in Britain’, for which he played the role of a ‘white power skinhead’.
In 1984, he was cast in Mike Leigh’s film, ‘Meantime’, where he played a shy and timid person.
He delivered an award-winning performance in Stephen Frears 1984 drama film, ‘The Hit’, for which he won the Evening Standard Award.
He starred in the 1985 television film, ‘Murder with Mirrors’, which was based on Agatha Christie’s mystery novel, ‘They Do it With Mirrors’, along with Bette Davis and Helen Hayes.
In 1986, he appeared on the BBC channel, in the ‘King of the Ghetto’, a drama about the racial tensions in London’s east end, inspired by Farukh Dhondy’s novel.
He starred in the 1995 adventure film, ‘Rob Roy’, which was ranked number two at the box office, had a wide theatrical release and earned a gross revenue of thirty two million dollars in the United States and Canada alone.
In 1999, he directed the critically acclaimed film, ‘The War Zone’. The film earned numerous critics’ awards like the CICAE Award at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival, the Award for the Best new British Feature at the European Film Awards and the Award for the Best Director at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.
