According to the written statement Tom Cruise released after her birth, the name 'Suri' has origins in both Hebrew and Persian. While it means 'princess' in Hebrew, in Persian, it means 'red rose'. However, many magazines and other publications have reported that linguists revealed that Cruise misinterpreted the meaning of the word in Hebrew, stating that it actually means 'from Syria' in Hebrew and Arabic. They also noted that 'Suri' is a pet form of 'Sarah' in Yiddish, meaning 'princess', which might be the reason behind the mistake. Interestingly, after her name was made public, netizens found out that 'suri' also means 'pickpocket' in Japanese, 'horse mackerels' in Italian, and 'to sour' in a French verb form. This discovery led to jokes on the internet, which might be one of the reasons why the name, unlike many other celebrity names, did not see wide adoption.
