When Yoon-gi was 12, he listened to hip-hop songs such as Stony Skunk’s ‘Ragga Muffin’ and Epik High’s ‘Fly.’ He was greatly inspired by the hip-hop genre of music, as he felt that it was different from mainstream music. He started composing music at the tender age of 13. At the age of 17, Yoon-gi started doing a part-time job with a recording studio. While working there, he learned more about composing and arranging music and started performing rap music. Initially, his parents were not very supportive of his career choice. However, they later accepted his choice and were proud of him.
Min Yoon-gi started his career as an underground rapper with the hip-hop group ‘D-Town.’ He used the stage name “Gloss” for his performances. This was the literal translation of his name into English. In 2010, while working with ‘D-Town,’ he released the song ‘518-062,’ in commemoration of the ‘Gwangju Uprising.’ He also made an appearance as a dancer in Jo Kwon’s music video ‘I’m The One.’
In 2013, Min Yoon-gi debuted as part of the South Korean boy band ‘Bangtan Boys,’ also known as ‘BTS.’ The band was formed by the entertainment company ‘Big Hit Entertainment.’ Yoon-gi adopted the stage name “Suga” for ‘BTS.’ The name was coined from the first two syllables of the term “shooting guard.” Yoon-gi is passionate about basketball, and while in school, he played as a shooting guard. The band debuted in June 2013, with the track ‘No More Dream’ from their debut album, ‘2 Cool 4 Skool.’ Yoon-gi has composed a number of tracks for ‘BTS.’
In 2014, ‘BTS’ released a Japanese album, ‘Wake Up,’ and a South Korean album, ‘Dark & Wild.’ Yoon-gi wrote a number of hit songs for ‘BTS,’ such as ‘Jump,’ ‘Tomorrow,’ and ‘Like. He composed songs for their hit albums ‘Wings’ and ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1.’ The songs composed by him were highly appreciated and helped ‘BTS’ gain immense success. The band performed at events such as the ‘Mnet Asian Music Awards’ and the ‘Billboard Music Awards.’ In 2017, ‘Bangtan Boys’ became the first K-pop group to win the award for the ‘Top Social Artist’ at the ‘Billboard Music Awards.’
In 2016, Min Yoon-gi started his solo career and released his debut mixtape under the alias “Agust D” on ‘SoundCloud.’ He derived the alias by spelling ‘DT’ and ‘Suga’ backwards. ‘DT’ is the abbreviated form for his hometown, Daegu Town. In this album, Yoon-gi spoke about his battle with depression and social phobia. It was rated as one of the top 20 mixtapes of 2016 by ‘Fuse TV.’
In 2017, Yoon-gi composed the song ‘Wine’ for singer Suran. This song was a big hit with the youth of Korea. It reached the second spot on the ‘Gaon Digital Chart’ and won an award for the best ‘Soul/R&B’ track at the ‘Melon Music Awards’ in December 2017. Yoon-gi received the ‘Hot Trend Award’ for his work in this song.
Yoon-gi combats depression and stress by composing lyrics. He wrote the song ‘Like It’ within 40 minutes. Although he is a laid-back person, he is very diligent while composing music. He composes music every day, even when he is in a waiting room or a toilet. He likes to make rhymes about day-to-day situations.
Sleep, quiet places, and less-crowded places are the three things he likes. His band members often refer to him as “Grandpa.”
Min Yoon-gi dislikes dancing. His hobbies are playing games, reading comics, and taking photographs. He is passionate about basketball. He is fluent in various dialects of the Korean language but is not too good in Japanese and English.
Yoon-gi is an honest and straightforward person. He makes blunt statements and scolds the younger members of his team when they make mistakes. His lyrics are based on themes that are full of life and hope. His motto in life is: “Let’s live while having fun. Doing music as your hobby and doing it as work is different.”
