The past couple of years have seen Sofia transforming from a talented yet largely obscure songwriter to a singer-turned-actress whose popularity keeps growing by the day. Fittingly, this fairy-tale rise to stardom was orchestrated by Disney. It all began in 2014, when Sofia landed a guest role in the third season of the teen sitcom, 'Austin and Ally'. In the same year, Sofia guest-starred in MTV's popular yet short-lived 'Faking It'. Though the roles were minor, Sofia's screen presence and spontaneity was hard to miss.

In 2015 came the big break in the form of 'Descendants', a Disney musical fantasy TV movie which followed the descendants of some of the most (in)famous Disney villains (the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, Maleficent and Jafar) on their quest to free their parents from captivity. The movie was an instant hit, and proved to be a turning point in Sofia's career.

Sofia played Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen in the movie, and what made her stand out from the rest of the ensemble cast was her distinctive voice. She was not just an actress who could sing, in fact, it was more the other way around. Perhaps this is the reason that prompted Disney to release a second version of 'Rotten to the Core', one of the hit tracks from the movie. The single performed by Sofia peaked at No.1 on the 'Billboard Kid Digital Songs' chart in December 2015. The song also peaked at No. 5 on the 'Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles' chart, thereby reaffirming Sofia's credentials as a promising singer. This doesn't come as a surprise to many who know Sofia personally since she is a trained singer with years of experience behind her.

Following 'Descendants', the floodgates opened, and along came the co-starring role in 'Adventures in Babysitting', a remake of the 1987 classic of the same name. The movie followed the misadventures of two rival babysitters (played by Sofia and Sabrina Carpenter) who are forced to put their differences aside as they frantically search for a ward who goes missing. It was the 100th Disney Channel Original Movie, and being attached in a major way to a high-profile project gave Sofia's career yet another fillip.

The juggernaut didn't stop there. In quick succession came the direct-to-video teen comedy musical, 'A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits'. This was essentially Sofia's first project as a solo lead, and the movie's soundtrack featured original songs performed by Sofia. As of late 2016, Sofia's purple patch is showing no signs of fading anytime soon, and that should be heartening news to the millions of fans around the globe.
