Skylar Grey was born as Holly Brook Hafermann on February 23, 1986 in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, USA, to Candace Kreitlow and Gene Roger Hafermann. As a child, Skylar Grey performed in a folk duo called Generations along with her mother. In 2005, she released her first EP titled ‘Holly Brook EP’ and co-wrote the tracks "She Said" and "Done With Like" for Larson's album, ‘Finally Out of P.E.’ The following year, she released her debut album ‘Like Blood Like Honey’. After this, she got featured on two tracks "No Sad Tomorrow" and "Victim" from Apathy's studio album titled ‘Wanna Snuggle.’
On June 10, 2010, the singer released her third EP ‘O’ Dark: Thirty’. That year, she also wrote her first song "Love The Way You Lie" for Rihanna and Eminem. After this, Grey went on to release her track “Dance Without You" in June 2011. In the month of July, her second single "Invisible" was released on radio. The following year, she co-wrote the single "Clarity" for Russian-German musician Zedd. She also released the lead single for her album ‘Don't Look Down’ titled "C'mon Let Me Ride". Soon after this, Grey’s single “Final Warning" from the album was released.
On June 4, 2013, she released the single "Wear Me Out". On January 20, 2014, she released a track titled "Shot Me Down". That year, the American singer also teamed up with Nicki Minaj to co-write the track "Bed of Lies" for the latter’s album ‘The Pinkprint.’ Then in February 2015, Skylar Grey released a song for the movie ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’s soundtrack titled "I Know You”. On September 23, 2016, she came out with her third studio album titled ‘Natural Causes’ that featured singles like "Come Up For Air" and "Lemonade”. On January 25, 2018, Grey released a cover of the late R&B singer Ben E. King's "Stand By Me".
