Satnam Singh started playing basketball at an early age. He was enrolled at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy by his father who noticed his son’s unusually tall height. He was taught by Dr. Sankaran Subramanian, former Punjab basketball coach and director of the Sports Authority of India. He towered at 6 feet 11 inches when he was only 13. He soon started gaining national attention as well.
Singh came to attention in June 2010, after leading the Punjab youth team to a national championship. This led the Basketball Federation of Indian to choose him to play at the NBA ‘Basketball without Borders’ camp which was held in Singapore. He played against some members of the Indian national team as well, and performed brilliantly.
Soon, he was awarded a scholarship under the IMGR basketball training, and taken to Bradenton, Florida. Though he had no knowledge of English, he was one of the 29 student athletes to train at the IMG academy. His performance was good during the 2014-15 season, where he averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in less than 20 minutes per game. Unfortunately, because of his poor English, he was unable to get a scholarship to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Singh was drafted into the NBA during the 2015 NBA draft, after being selected by the Dallas Mavericks in June 2015. This made him the first Indian-born player to be drafted into the NBA. He played with the team during the 2015 NBA Summer League. After being acquired by the Texas Legends, he made his professional debut in November in a match against Austin Spurs, which resulted in a 104-82 loss for the Legends. His best performance of the season was seen on 5th February 2016, where he got six points and six rebounds in 22 minutes as a starter. However, the match ended in a loss for his team.
At the age of thirteen, Satnam Singh played for the Indian youth national basketball team at the 2009 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship. The Indian team finished at the 10th place in the tournament.
