Sarah Barthel

Sarah Demarest Barthel was born on February 17, 1983 in Greenwich, New York to Bruce Barthel and Claire Demarest. She had an older sister named Rebecca Claire Barthel who committed suicide in January 2016 after suffering from depression for a long time. Sarah, who considered her sister a hero, revealed in an interview that she can't help feeling responsible for her death. She studied visual arts at Champlain College in Vermont.

Sarah Barthel returned home in the summer of 2007 after being dissatisfied with her visual arts degree at college. During this time, Josh Carter, who went to the same preschool as her and later became her friend in junior high school, was also back home from a brief stint with Grand Habit in New York City. With his older brother, John, he had formed an experimental band, which Sarah joined to help Carter finish some of his earliest songwriting ideas. The two friends eventually made the band official by the name 'Charlie Everywhere' and began performing at live shows around the Saratoga Springs area. They soon decided to focus on making records and released two EPs, 'Charlie Everywhere EP 1 and 2', from the local label Sub-Bombin Records.

On January 26, 2009, they signed a record deal with UK label Barely Breaking Even and subsequently changed the band's name to 'Phantogram', inspired by the optical illusion of the same name. In May that year, the newly renamed band self-released their eponymous debut EP from CE Records, followed by their next EP, 'Running From the Cops', from BBE later that year. Their debut album, 'Eyelid Movies', was released in Europe from BBE on September 15, 2009, followed by US release from Barsuk on February 9, 2010. The album received favorable reviews and ranked No.7 on the US 'Billboard Top Heatseekers' chart. However, it is the single 'Fall in Love' from their second studio album 'Voices' that helped them gain a huge fan base and was certified Gold by RIAA in September 2017. The album, which was released back in February 2014, debuted at No.11 on 'Billboard 200' and No.3 on 'Top Rock Albums'.

Sarah Barthel met Olympian Shaun White for the first time backstage at the 'Saturday Night Live' show in 2013. At the time, he was looking for an apartment in New York City and she was living in Brooklyn. After they bumped into each other, they developed a friendship and over time became romantically involved. While they think that their relationship is strengthened by the fact that they "live in two different worlds", White is also into music, and according to him, she is a tremendous snowboarder. The couple lives together in the Los Angeles area and act as co-parents to their adorable dog Leroy Brown, which has its own Instagram account with 27.7k followers, as well as its own merchandise available from her band's online shop. However, they are currently too busy with their respective careers to think about marriage.

Sarah Barthel was dragged into a controversy after her boyfriend became the first person to win three gold medals in Olympic snowboarding competitions in February 2018. In the backdrop of the nation-wide #MeToo movement, references to the lawsuit filed against him by his then band-mate and Bad Things drummer Lena Zawaideh back in August 2016, claiming sexual harassment and breach of contract, resurfaced on social media. While he had initially denied the allegations, terming them 'gossips', the case was later settled out-of-court in May 2017. Following the uproar, he recently apologized for his past behavior during an appearance on NBC’s 'Today' show, even though many criticized the interviewer for going too soft. However, she has continued to support him through thick and thin and showered praise on him on social media.
