Ryan Phillippe met actress Reese Witherspoon for the first time at her 21st birthday party in 1997. The actress told him, "You're my best birthday present", and they exchanged letters and phone calls for weeks before they went on their first date. Soon, they moved in together, and became engaged in December 1998.
