Mary Rose Byrne was born on July 24, 1979 in Balmain, Sydney, Australia, to parents Jane and Robin Bryne. Her father was a statistician and market researcher, while her mother was an administrator in a primary school. Rose is the youngest of their four children.
She did her schooling from Balmain Public School, as well as Hunters Hill High School. She later went to Bradfield College in order to pursue her higher studies. She had also been taking acting classes from the age of eight. In 1999, she studied acting in the Atlantic Theater Company.
