Rory John Gates

Rory John Gates was born on May 23, 1999 in Seattle, Washington to Bill Gates and Melinda Gates. He has English, Irish, German and Scots-Irish ancestry. His father is a business magnate, investor, author, and philanthropist, who co-founded Microsoft along with Paul Allen in 1975. His mother is also a businesswoman and philanthropist who co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with her husband. His grandfather, William H. Gates Sr., was a prominent lawyer, while his grandmother, Mary Maxwell Gates, used to serve on the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way.

He is the second child and only son of his parents and has an elder sister named Jennifer Katharine Gates and a younger sister named Phoebe Adele Gates. His parents followed strict parenting rules to ensure that the kids do not become spoilt brats. Following the rules set by his parents, Rory and his sisters were not allowed to have phones till they were 13 years old. He and his siblings were given decent amount of pocket money by their parents for doing household chores. His parents often take interest in what the children are learning and take them to educational tours to enlighten them about different cultures and their histories.

Rory also received science lessons from his father while on vacation in Europe. He attended Seattle's most elite private school, Lakeside School, which his father and his older sister also attended. He currently lives in Medina, Washington with his family. In a recent interview, his mother mentioned that while her son is compassionate, curious and kind, what makes her the proudest is that her son is a feminist.

Being born to Bill and Melinda Gates, Rory John Gates has lived the entirety of his life under the limelight. However, his parents made sure that he and his sisters had a normal upbringing despite their elite status. Like his sisters, he has kept a low profile throughout his life. At the age of ten, while learning about different forms of poetry, he decided to write a poem on the physics of light that he had learned from his father while on vacation in Europe. The seven-line diamond-shaped poem, known as ‘Rory’s Diamante Poem’, had mentions of light, stars and black hole. He then requested his father to publish the poem on his website, which the proud father did in April 2010. Following this, he became a sensation among the masses. Along with his sisters, he was being hailed as the world’s richest heir till his father decided to give away $28billion to charitable causes, and thereby descending to number two spot.
